Wartenburg - 3 October 1813
Historical Background
Marshal Ney ordered Bertrand’s depleted IV Corps to Wartenburg, to prevent the Allied army from crossing the Elbe River.
This corps had been in the thick of the fighting at Dennewitz and suffered when withdrawal turned into rout. Only one of his three divisions was French. Bertrand arrived at Wartenburg on the 2nd and deployed his forces. The Prussians arrived the next day, and began their attack early in the morning. Steinmetz’s troops began the fighting with a frontal assault against Wartenburg, but struggled against the heavy French fire. Horn joined the attack against Wartenburg, but the Prussian attack was still getting nowhere.
Mecklenburg finally drove the small Wurttemberg division defending Bleddin from the town. Next, Horn and Mecklenburg pushed the Italian division defending the gap between Wartenburg and Bleddin back, but only after heavy fighting. Morand’s French retreated from Wartenburg to avoid encirclement, ending the battle. The French and their allies fought valiantly on the defensive, but failed in their mission of keeping the Prussians east of the Elbe.
