Historical Background
After the Thirty were deposed, the new government, although more moderate, was not ready to compromise with the Athenian exiles, who now held the Athenian port of Piraeus. The new government sent emissaries to Sparta, and Sparta sent Pausanias at the head of an army to resolve the situation. When Pausanias ordered the exiles to disperse, they refused. The following day, an Athenian exile force of light troops attacked the Spartans. Pausanias responded and ordered his cavalry and light troops forward with his Spartan Hoplites in support. The Athenian lights held for a time, giving Thrasybulus the opportunity to bring forward his Hoplites. The Spartan Hoplites engaged them and the exiles were defeated. After winning the battle, Pausanias suggested the government in Athens and the exiles talk. In time, the new government arranged a settlement between the oligarchs and the exiles that reunified Athens.

At a first glance, one could be forgiven for thinking that the Spartans should win the majority of the time as they have the stronger army. But the Athenian position on the hill compensates. In our game, the Spartans won 6-5, but it took a long time as we went through the deck and had to reshuffle. Moreover, the Athenians could have taken it 6-4 if they had rolled better. This is a tense scenario and well worth playing.

This was actually an interesting battle. The Athenians have enough in the center to hold the hills until mid/late game. After that, I scattered them so the Spartans would have to spread their army to catch me. My Athenian army has speed to out maneuver the med foot troops. Even after a weak opening hand (two move heavy cards included), I was able to pull a 6/5 victory. I never used a command card on the Athenian med troops. Tomorrow I play as Spartans.

Played recently with stormwalker as part of Spartan Hegemony campaign (10 scenarios, so far 5 played).
Again, bold maneuver of attacking downhill payed off, although in the end I had to fend-off some Spartans who managed to climb the hills.
