As part of the Dragoon (invasion of Southern France), the 3rd Infantry Division, IV Corps the army landed in Alpha Beach (Cavalaire-sur-Mer), on August 15, '44. Orders are to scout to the north and determine the lack of enemy resistance. On August 23 scouts indicate a village North of Marseille that is occupied by hostile forces where the enemy general has positioned his headquarters.
