HISTORY DETAILS
Learning of the main advance of the Ryuzoji army, which hoped to crush his domain, Shimazu Iehisa chose to make a stand at Okitanawate despite being heavily outnumbered. In addition to being a confined area, Iehisa constructed a palisade across one end of the valley and then divided his army, placing an ambush force on each side of the valley. Ryuzoji Takanobu was confident of victory as he advanced with his army down the valley, but as his force approached the pallisades, the Shimazu ambush force rose up and attacked from each side. As the Ryuzoji vanguard began to waver, Akaboshi Nobuie charged forward, which caused panic among the attackers. Takanobu sent a message to the front to enquire what was happening but the message was misunderstood and the Ryuzoji forces started to withdraw. The Ryuzoji withdrawal turned into a rout when Ryuzoji Takanobu's head was taken.

HISTORY DETAILS
Ito Yoshisuke consolidated his gains over Hyuga province with the capture of Obi. Ito then pushed into Osumi, a holding of the Shimazu clan. Shimazu Yoshihiro only had a few men with him, but was determined to make a stand. By most accounts, he fielded slightly over 300 men to Yoshisuke's 3000, but the Shimazu were well led, took up a defensive position, and used feigned retreates to stretch out and disorganise the Ito as they advanced. By the end of the day, the Shimazu clan still held the field.

Determined to crush the growing power of the Shimazu, Ôtomo Sôrin and his son Yoshimune led an enormous host into Hyûga, intent on recapturing lands taken from the Itô family. Tawara Chikataka, Sôrin's brother-in-law, led the bulk of the army to besiege Shimazu Iehisa in Taka castle. Yoshihisa hastily rallied his kinsmen and marched north to Sadowara, where he was briefly held up by bad weather. Meanwhile, his brother Yoshihiro, who was advancing along a different route, encountered and scattered an advance Ôtomo force, following up this success with the destruction of an enemy fort at Matsuyama. Yoshihisa then advanced to the Taka area, and joined with the rest of the Shimazu clan.
In the resulting battle Tawara sent the Ôtomo army in a frontal attack that was repulsed after some bitter fighting. The Ôtomo were quickly routed, and Yoshihisa won an amazing victory that cost his enemy thousands of men and heralded their decline. This battle represents one of several significant occasions in which the Shimazu, though among the major users of arquebuses, faced the Ôtomo clan's European-made cannon.
