Round 4
MM18 Epic Vitoria (21 June 1813) - British Right flank
RiverWanderer (Mark B.): Allies 15 (lost blocks: 67)
Stephen Thompson: French 12 (lost blocks: 67)
Both sides spent the first part of the game getting into position and trying to mitigate threats from the other's artillery. Whilst the Allies struggled to form an attack with a difficult river crossing, the French had to deal with bringing their artillery forward again from short supply plays.
Once action started it was predominantly ranged combat on the French left and melee around the hill in the river bend. Key moments included a foray of British Heavy Cavalry that neutralised the French artillery in the centre and a powerful French bayonet charge, stunted by a First Strike and follow-up ranged fire.
The final moments saw depleted units on both sides fighting to exhaustion over the French left flank, with the Allies at last daring to move into close combat there. On the opposite flank, the French Line had attacked (Leader Forward) out of the town and wiped out the approaching British Line in a single attack. In response there, the British used Grand Manoeuvre to bring a full-strength Foot Artillery behind French lines, where it threatened weaker French units, soon claiming an isolated French artillery unit.
Finally, Portuguese Light Infantry were able to gain the heights on the French left to melee a 1 block French line and claim the final two banners for victory, the French suffering their third leader loss of the game.
A long game that we had to play in seven 2 hour sessions. Thank you to Steve for an exciting and challenging game, and for his patience when our first couple of sessions suffered from a glitch in the beta module (now fixed).
Due to the multiple sessions and size of each log file, I have posted only the log for our last session. If there is particular interest, I can make the others available too.
