On June 6th, 1944, Lt. Col. James Earl Rudder led 3 companies of the 2nd Ranger Battalion to land the cliff of Pointe du Hoc and silence three battery positions before Normandy landing. They successfully controled the Pointe du Hoc and found the missing 155mm guns behind a tree line in the south of the battery.
