Round 3 - Waterloo

Game 2

Mark Benson (Allies ) 8 banners, 27 blocks lost
Andras Kopcik (French)  2 banners, 38 blocks lost

The game soon became a contest for the flanks, both sides gaining ground and yielding again and again to protect vulnerable units. A key moment came when a French Grand Manoeuvre made a bid to dominate Hougoumont, circulating fresh troops into the fight, including the Old Guard. The Allies were fortunate to be able to respond in kind, recalling Light Infantry, now in danger of being overwhelmed, and instead forming a line on the ridge behind the farm. Meanwhile, Rifles re-deployed to the opposite flank in the hope of snagging an elusive, retreating French unit.

The re-deployment of Rifles, prompted action on the French right, with light cavalry immediately coming forward to put the Rifles into square, Young Guard coming up in support. A desperate fight now ensured, which resolved eventually with the Rifles eliminated but at the cost of both of the French units. The action would resume here once the French Guard Heavy rode across, forcing more Allied infantry into square.

Meanwhile, having softening up the Grenadier Guards with ranged file, the French launched against the ridge behind Hougoumont, spear-headed by the Old Guard. After a counter-attack, both guard units had joined the banner track and the bruising follow up left both sides seeking respite and organising fresh attacks - the French for an artillery duel, the Allies for a Cavalry Charge. When it came, the charge claimed a French Foot Artillery and followed through to take the Cuirassiers who had retreated from the earlier attack on the ridge. On the other flank, a vain charge tried to fend off the threat from French Guard Horse Cavalry.

With Allied Cavalry now vulnerable following their charge, it seemed likely that the French would get some payback. Unfortunately, poor dice said otherwise, and successful battle-backs continued to wear down French cavalry. The remainder of the game saw Allied luck hold and two further French cavalry units fall, sealing the Allies' win.

Thanks to Andras for another challenging and exciting game.

Round 3

Game 1
Steven (Allies) - 7
Gileforn (French) - 8

That was a really hard game for French and allied troops made all they can. Also they were close to the last banner, but luck was on the French side.

Game 2

Steven (French) - 7
Gileforn (Allies) - 8

The first part of the game was about INF rolls for the most part of the ranged and melee attacks, So Allies got 4 banners very fast. According to good maneuvres and play French had a chance to wiv a game but in roll agains 1 LC with 3 dice was 0. Allies took a chance to recive the final one.

Thanks to Steven to find a time and for the both good games.

Round 3 - Waterloo

Game 1
Ben Turner (France) 8- 7 Samim Togan Alper (Allies)

Exciting game, with Togan taking an early lead. I then had a run of good cards, turns, playing fire and hold, leadership, cavalry charge, forced march, and bayonet charge, finally capturing the center town. Allies made a valiant final turn, wiping out a french line infantry and coming within one hit of the winning flag.

Game 2

Samim Togan Alper (French) 8 - 4 Ben Turner (Allies)

This one was a much faster game, at just over an hour. Samim played an aggressive game from the start, playing a bayonet charge on the second turn. Most early game action was on his right flank, where he wiped out a heavy cavalry an infantry, and a leader on an lcc. He took the early lead and this time never relinquished. I hung close with the score 6-4 when Samim played a bayonet charge and destoryed two weakened British units for the final points.

Round 3, Game 1 Waterloo

Carl Moon (British) 8 Banners
Josiah Leis (French) 4 Banners

The main theme of this game was increasing more powerful probing attacks by the French, pushing the British out of the three banner locations. The Britsh countered by hitting French artillery. As the casualties mounted, a big combined attack by French inf and cav pinned the British line aided by a rally result for the Old Guard back to 4 blocks from 1. Unfortunately for Napoleon, a British Bayonet charge picked off a number of 1 block units for the win. Thanks for an exciting game.

A game that went nothing like the real Waterloo.

Brad had lots of good attacking cards, so the Allies came forward, initially on their left, but mainly on their right.

The French (John) had some bombardment cards so got the Artillery in position to soften up the Allied centre, but then spent most of the game responding to the Allies.

The initial attack on the left failed, giving the French a lead of a couple of units.

While the battle on the Allied right saw the Lights advance and cause havoc, while the Old Guard took no prisoners in return.

An Allied cavalry charge had mixed results, and Brad tried to get to victory with a big push out of the woods on his right. However, despite eliminating a couple of weakened units, a French bayonet charge by the Old Guard and some line infantry from the centre to the flank eventually secured a closely fought 8-5 for the French.

My thanks to Brad for an enjoyable game.

Round 3, game 1. Waterloo

French, Tom Hilder. 6 banners
Allies, David Horts, 8 banners.

The french started very agressive, attacking Hougomont. But the british stopped all attempts to throw them out of the farm. Shortly after was the french infantry on the right flank who fighted against the allies in Papelotte. After some shootings the allied retained the position. In that moment the british cavalry made its impetuous performance... and all of them were killed after few rounds exposing themselves to the french shots. Even so, the allies could stop the advance of french units and finally they won after a hard fight.

Round 3, game 2. Waterloo.

French, David Horts, 8 banners.
Allies, Tom Hilder, 4 banners.

The french started moving towards Papelotte. The allies ran to defend it. The allied cavalry embarrassed the young guard. But the counterattack tithe the allies in that flank, killing a leader. In the middle, a brave british unit made go back the artillery unit, losing some powerfull in the retreat. At the left, the french advanced very slightly, without battling. The losses on the left flank weighed down the british actions, that made an important effort on their right flank to stop the french, killing a general. But it wasn't enough and the french finally won the match.

Thanks Tom for the two enjoying matches!

Round 3, Game 2 - Waterloo

French 7 Banners
Allies 8 Banners

This one went to the last (random) rolls of the dice. The French successfully took Papelotte with few casualties, and counter-battery fire rolled triple artillery to remove the British guns in centre.
But the assault on Hougemont failed with both the French light infantry and the line infantry being destroyed.
Both sides then kept picking off units with some great rolls, and missed the 1's with awful rolls.
And so it came to the end game, with both sides needing two banners and Brad (the French) nicely setting up an attack on the weak British left. However an Elan card that rolled 4 infantry and a cavalry looked likely to be decisive, but it was not to be, the Allies were stuck on 7.
So the French could continue their push on the right, eliminating the Dutch square and then having got behind the Dutch cavalry (at 2), rolled just one hit - so on we went again.
Another Elan from the Allies, only one artillery and one infantry! 5 dice on a 2 for the Rifles - no hits! So the last chance artillery into the woods against a 1 infantry - a hit!
It could not have been closer, nor could the dice have been more fickle!
Thanks again to Brad for another really tense game.

Apologies for the delay on the write-up.  I thought I lost this round but it appears that I possibly may have won it  So both of us were waiting for the other to do the write up!

Round 3 - Waterloo

Game 1

Eric Yorkston (Allies) 8 banners, 28 blocks lost
FX (French) 4 banners, 37 blocks lost

Game 2

FX (Allies) 8 banners, 36 blocks lost
Eric Yorkston (French) 6 banners, 39 blocks lost

They were hard-fought battles. Game 1 was decided on the Allies right flank. After successfully advancing there, the Allies were able to attack the French middle from two sides. Game 2 the Allies once again repelled multiple French attacks on their right flank. The French almost pulled a victory out with French cavalry harrying the British artillery, but the cavalry got trapped behind the British lines and were eliminated for the Victory.
