Gileforn (French) 1 Banner
The British and Portuguese moved up smartly and lined the heights with a solid line.  The French moved against the heights but a British forced march and fire and hold repulsed that initial move.  The French pushed hard on the left against the Portuguese and then pushed on the Right Flank.   The Allies held firm and secured the victory.

A French light made an early move in to the Church and was punished severely.  A French Forced March followed and there was a strong surge in the center.  The British hit back hard and the battle raged back and forth.   The dice were such that a large number of units were nearly eliminated, but few were actually eliminated.   The Portuguese made a move towards the center and pushed the French back.   The French kept attacking and got an equal number of units on the heights when the Allies responded with a La Grande Maneuver to attempt to hold the heights and keep the French from gaining two banners and the win.   The French were able to order 2 in each section after that to pick up the two banners needed for the win.

Round 1
Game 1
EZPickins (Allies) 9 banners
Brad Jessup (French) 6 banners

The Allies formed a line on the central heights and used their superior range to whittle down the French infantry that approached.  They then advanced on the left to engage the weakened units having a nice lead in banners at the time. It was a violent class with the attacking force wiped out but inflicting heavy losses as they died. The score stood at 7-4 with the Allies still holding the hills.  The French began to assault the central hill and were able to gain ground.and kill two units. With the center taken they then assaulted the Portuguese on but ended up failing and losing the final unit to end the game.

Game 2
EZPickins (French) 9
Brad Jessup (Allies) 8

Fearing the British fire the French  formed up on the left as the cavalry was used to harass the enemy. They then moved to firing range where superior luck killled  Stubbs and two units before closing. The Allied  Grenadier was sent to reinforce and was very effective. With it's help the French were kept from taking the heights for the time being. Stalled here the French advanced in the center which had be reinforced by this time. Taupin attached to a line unit made it up the hill killing and British line in the process. Score not at 7 to 4 with both sides having several severely weakened units. The Allies played Fire and Hold and picked of two them right off and forced Taupin to retreat. The French cavalry which was surprisingly still around used Breaking the Square to kill a Portuguese line but then got killed as it attacked the grenadier. This guy got another kill with ranged fire to tie the score at 8-8.  The French played La Grande Maneuver to place four units on the heights which would give them the majority if they held on. The Allies had to attack and activated two units. A 2sp line melee versus a French 4 sp socred 2 hits. but the battle back did the same eliminating it to win the game.

Two really fun games against a very fine opponent. Thanks for that Brad

Round 1 - Sorauren French Right

Game 2
John Spicer – French – 9 banners
Mark Benson (RiverWanderer) – Allies – 5 banners

Another closely fought game ended with another French win.

The French were rather forced to attack on a narrow front on the right initially, but came off significantly worse.

However a big push against the Portuguese on the Allied right got off to a lucky start with one of the line infantry being very fortuitously eliminated. And from there the French were able to get units forward quicker than the defenders and steadily eliminated them to get onto the all important hill.

In order to try to remedy the situation the British troops had to be thrown in rather piecemeal, and some cold steel ended a close contest with plenty of weak units on both side and the French in control of the hill.

My thanks to Mark both for two close games and his help as I learnt how to use the new module.

Round 1 Game 2
  • Francois-Xavier, (Allies), 3 banners
  • David (French), 9 banners
The Allies started battle organizing a tight line on the top of the hills, from one side to another. Some french shots damaged the line but the reserves fixed that mess. Meanwhile, the french were trying to move their cannons to the front, lets see if they can do some casualties. At one point, the english infantry charged, trying to get the church. They were repelled and a french forced march gave them back up to the hills with serious losses. Then, the french cavalry charged, making trouble among the allies. The portugese tried to break the front on the allied right flank but the french infantry stopped them definitivelly.

Thanks Francois for the two games!!

Round 1 Game 2

Neal  (French)  3 Banners
Carl (Allies) 9 Banners

Both sides maneuvered to create to create lines 3 hexes apart (waiting for Force March, Bayonet and Hold/Fire cards), but an early lucky British artillery counter battery fire silenced the French artillery. The French were compelled to attack the hill but with poor dice rolls make no headway. More progress was made attacking the Portuegese, but as the British line moved to support, further good luck with the British dice sealed the day.

502 Sorauren - French right early afternoon (28 July 1813) [ICT2022 - Round One - 1st game]
French(Samim Togan Alper) 8 vs Allies(A) 9

The French were early on the throat of the Allied Right(LGM played as the first card). Allies were able to withdraw from the hills in relatively good order, while their artillery opened up to cover the flanking force of gen. Madden. The French were not distracted and initiated a Bayonet Charge in the center. A Portuguese LT was scattered and the British Lights decimated while holding their ground. An Allied counter had mixed results. French pressed on with great Elan! the Allies barely held. Musketry took a heavy toll on the French. The Blue line hurled forward once more destroying 2 units. Allies responded with deadly ranged fire again. Both sides consolidated to the hill line wrestling for victory. Luck favored the Reds in the end.

502 Sorauren - French right early afternoon (28 July 1813) [ICT2022 - Round One - 2nd game]
French(A) 9(7+2) vs Allies(Samim Togan Alper) 5

Both sides tried to form up while exchanging fire. The Brits ordered a Bayonet Charge down the hills hitting hard the French Line. The Blues countered with their own charge reaching the hills. Heavy fighting ensued for the ridge with casualties on both sides. Finally, French Cavalry was able to pin down the Allied left in squares even though the infantry struggled to take advantage of the situation. A desperate and final attempt by gen. Lambert to chase off the French from the heights was unsuccessful.

Two extremely tense and long battles with many epic moments and twists with an excellent opponent.

Round 2 Orthez
Game 1
John Dietrich (Allies) 8 banners
Greg Ottoman (French) 2 banners

The Allies advanced their right to hit the French where they had the least advantageous terrain. It started with effective ranged fire and a Short Supply sent their arty to the rear. Help from the center forced the Allies back but they had a good banner lead. Another Short Supply sent the lead unit back as it was driving a weakened Poruguese  unit to the edge. Action in the center eliminated the defender in the church which was soon taken by the Allies. Several attempts were made to retake it but it couldn't be done as the last banner was taken.

Game 2
John Dietrich (French) 6 banners
Greg Ottoman (Allies) 8 banners

This time the French move up on the left to engage the Allies if they advanced as I had done in the previous game.  The Allies changed it up and consolidated on the right but only skirmishing took place here. The French continued to move forward on the left where there was tough fighting as the Allied center forces joined in. It went back  and forth over several turns but the French were able to win in the end. They lost the church but kept the hills in the end.

Two quick fun battles against a quality opponent.

A reminder for any one who may have forgotten or missed my email, this month's scenario (Orthez) is 8 banners - the scenario is missing two placeholders in the module, though the scenario notes are correct.
