Perhaps this is the opening game of MT05? Thanks to Andrey for getting in touch and getting us off to an early start.

Round 2 - GI07 Battle of Mugellum 542 AD

RiverWanderer (Mark B.)  - Ostrogoths: 6 banners (14 blocks lost)
Gileforn - Byzantine: 2 banners (29 blocks lost)

Both sides were hoping to get some ranged combat in to soften up the opposition and both managed tactical moves to frustrate the other. Thereafter, the Byzantines brought forward their flanking cavalry in an effort to flush Goth lights out of the forests. The Goth leaders came forward to support the fight and lucky combats, combined with forest cover, soon helped to even the odds.

The battle started to heat up when Bodulla led an Assault Right, neutralising the Byzantine cavalry threat on that flank. A Medium cavalry unit spear-headed the Goth attack, luckily surviving an Ambush and later delivering an effective First Strike before finally succumbing. The final unit of Byzantine left flank cavalry then fell to ranged combat, taking the banner line to 4:1 in favour of the Goths.

As the Goths reorganised for the next battle phase, the remaining Byzantine cavalry swept into the centre, threatening Goth weak points. Now was the moment for the Goth warriors who had been sheltering behind the hill. Totila lead a Foot Onslaught, slamming into the Byzantine cavalry. Critically, a 2-block cavalry unit was unable to evade and was swept away in a six dice attack. The follow up failed to snag the weakened light bow infantry behind them and battle-back resulted in unlucky Totila's demise, raising Byzantine hopes for a powerful response with the score at 5:2.

The Byzantines went for Leadership Center with Bessus in command, inspired to a Mounted Charge for one cavalry unit supported by infantry units. Without their leader, the Goths had more luck in these combats, a weakened Warrior unit retreating into the distance and a full-strength one withstanding the cavalry's attack. Now taking their chance to claim victory, those Warriors charged forward and at last took the 1-block Light Bow infantry as the final banner.

I worked with Alessandro the last few days on a bug on email contacts. He found and fixed an issue which I believe has to do with players with multiple accounts on CCN.

Additionally, it appears some people in the tournament do not allow emails to be sent. Users should edit their profile Forum Settings to email so it is visible to other viewers. Go to your profile (by clicking on your name) and be sure your Forum Settings has an email option of Yes or Registered Users. Click save. You should be able to see email contacts from the tournament players as shown in the attachment image.

Round 4 - GI07 Battle of Mugellum 542 AD

gheintze  - Ostrogoths: 5 banners (23 blocks lost)
John of York - Byzantine: 6 banners (26 blocks lost)

I start with no leadership cards in hand but soon draw three. Geoff starts with LINE COMMAND and orders all 14 of his units. This is a bit worrying. After I arrange my lines on my right there are several turns of ranged fire with me getting back the better of things. I then use FIRE and CLOSE to hit the forward AI and kill off one of them. The battle then shifts to my left and center. Then FOOT ON SLAUGHT is the order of the day but Geoff has two to my one and soon gets the upper hand as he wipes out a MI and HI for the loss one a WI. I feel I must use one of my LEADERSHIP cards to attack the 1 block HI in the center to try and right things a bit. I have no Isp tokens left so it is a 4d attack with leader - what could possibly go wrong? A whiff and worse his BB gets two hits on my HBC. It gets worse as another FOOT ONSLAUGHT closes with my now weak center and kills off my HBC and Narses has to evade off the board. A WI then finishes off a weak AI and a board edge LB and Geoff now leads 5 to 2. My miss on the HI proves to be very costly as it allowed his FOOT ONSLAUGHT to occur. I am in dire shape now. It nearly got worse as in my next turn a flag on his center WI is taken and allows Geoff a chance to hit a 3 block MI on my right. His 5d attack only gets one hit and I am very lucky to survive to continue. I am able to kill off the WI in my turn (in spite of Geoff playing FIRST STRIKE) and then regroup a bit.   My DARKEN the SKY kills off the center 1 block HI and Teia and the game is tied. A few turns later my MOUNTED CHARGE closes in on a 1 block WI in the woods and ends things. Whew - I was toast in this one and very lucky to have pulled victory from the jaws of defeat. Geoff, as always put me through the wringer and had me close to falling on my sword as morale plummeted. I was fortunate that he ran out of cards a bit in the end and my ranged fire setup my chance to win.

Round 1mk20336 (Goth)  3 banners won, 24 blocks lostGileforn (Byzantine) 6 banners won, 25 blocks lost
That was a batlle in a rainy day, arrows missed a lot, but then weather have been changed for the swords. Byzantine was well before onslaught of warriors in the center, they broke all they can. If they will be little bit more lucky game would be ended earlier with other points. It was 3-3 when the last MC unit was blocked by two goths. First strike made a game. A leader was captured and goths MC got too much flags. The last attack brought 6th banner to that small Byzantine MC.

Thanks to Michal for the nervious and well played game, but the luck was at Byznatine side at this battle.
