G105 Battle of Mons Lactarius 552ADJavelinthrower: 4 banners won, 26 blocks lost.Nick P: 6 banners won, 19 blocks lost. The Goths were in a strong position, safe from the Byzantine cavalry so the task of the Byzantine commander, Nick was to tempt them off the hills and onto the wide flat plain below.A Byzantine attack on the Goth left flank immediately brought results with the Goths rushing to defend the broken ground and Geberic leading his warriors out onto the flat ground. The Byzantine medium were pushed back but they responded with a cavalry action lead by the heavy bow cavalry of John. There followed some intense hand to hand fighting which killed two Byzantine auxilia units and drew down from the mountains a further two warrior units to their death. Geberic escaped with his life back to the mountains. With five Goth units killed and no serious Byzantine casualties, things looked bad for Teia as, accompanied by two warrior units, he led his heavy infantry in a last gasp charge down from the mountains and out onto the plain to attack the apparently poorly defended Byzantine centre. Narses and John cried “havoc” and led a pincer attack on the hapless warriors with their heavy bow cavalry. The warrior units were badly injured and put to flight. John boldly gave chase with his heavy bow cavalry to end the battle and there seemed no hope for the retreating one block warrior unit. But Teia had other ideas, he used his heavy infantry to ambush the heavy bow cavalry of John and killed them all, including John!  Emboldened by his success, Teia charged his heavy infantry at the heavy bow cavalry of Narses, who declined the offer to evade and prepared to give battle. Narses heavy bow cavalry were slaughtered, with Narses himself falling at the last. Teia managed to put an auxilia unit to flight before the, now leaderless, Byzantines surrounded and finally killed to one block warrior unit that had followed Teia on his madcap charge.

    Round 1

Gheintze (Goths) 6 banners, 13 blocks lost
Streetfighter (Byzantines) 1 banner, 26 blocks lost

After the Byzantines advanced on all fronts, the Goths played double time and moved 4 warriors up in the middle to combat the Byz MI and Aux. This was followed up by several turns of orders in the center and the Byzantines had no defense for the ferocious warriors.

Round 4 GI05 Battle of Mons Lactarius 552AD

Mark McG (Goth) 6 banners 18 blocks lost
Gileforn (Byzantines)  4 banners  27 blocks lost

Some initial missile fire was fairly inconsequential, and as the Goths hugged the terrain, the Byzantines came up their right to push up against the broken terrain.
Goths charged left and right, with their left getting the worst of it, but a success on their right. The Byzantines rallied, and with a hot streak on the dice, were ahead 4-2. With the writing on the wall, it was time for Teia to shine, and shine he did like a supernova. A timely leadership command card allowed him to make a Foot onslaught on the Goth right, and he went through the Byzantine foot like a hot knife through butter, culminating in a 1 block warrior making a 4 die attack on a 2 block HBC and rolling 2 Reds...  magic dice, magic man.

    gheintze vs gotigerssc, Round 5
    Battle of Taginae

gheintze 6 medals, 10 blocks lost
gotigerssc 1 medal, 29 blocks lost

After 1-3 rounds of positioning, the Goths used a mounted charge to get two medals and significantly weaken the center of the byzantine line.  After retreating from the counter, the cavalry charged again.  Unfortunately, the byzantines were unable to score any hits, so the battle was over relatively quickly. Tough night for Justin...

    MUGELLUM

    Renaud(Goth) 6 banners, 12 blocks lost
    vs
Dan (Byzantine) 2 banners, 21 blocks lost

Valerian and the Byzantine cav moved against the camp on their left, but failed to scored hits (and the one flag was ignored), and took 2 on the battle back. A Gothic move-fire-move was not very effective, but next a charge by Vitiges' cavalry and the warriors from across the river started a rollup of the Byzantine flank that resulted in both cav units and their leader dead. Vitiges rushed to the bridge and did some damage the Auxilia at the same that another warrior unit moved against a pinned LB in the center-left. Hits were scored and 1 unit killed, but on the counter-attack the Auxilia at the gate scored 2 hits on2 rolls and killed Vitiges' unit though not him. The action moved to the center as the Byzantines attempted a foot onslaught, but were not all that successful (despite a failed first strike by the warriors, who then took 2 hits, but then retreated out of melee reach). The Goth MI led by their other leader launched their own foot onslaught and while they lost 1 unit on the blow back, they scored the remaining banner with a line command for a 6-2 victory.

    FAVENTIA

Renaud (Goth) 6 banners, 28 blocks lost
    vs
Justin (Byzantines) 4 banners, 31 blocks lost

A hared fought victory for the Goths. I first moved on my left to threaten the Byzantine camp. As expected that led Justin to to move SHBC, HI and MI from his center right to counter. Yet despite some fights in the woods, rough ground and river, no units would die there as the battle was won on the other flank. After positioning a first cavalry charge by the Goths hurt the Byzantines, but not too badly, and the counterattack combining units from the Byzantine left and center was effective in eventually killing Totila's nobles, but the rest of the Goth cavalry was still in reasonable shape. The Goth warriors were then able to launch an onslaught and trap the Byzantine LC while damaging some of Justin's heavy infantry (though I forgot to roll the additional die). The responding onslaught and cavalry action managed to kill all 3 warriors bringing the score to 4-5 (B-G). The action momentarily moved to the other flank, with the Goth HC and warriors attacking the Byzantine Auxilia in the woods. The HC scored 2 hits, leaving 1 block, but the Warriors scored 2 flags and the Auxilia escaped. On the blow back the warriors ere reduced to 1, surviving attacks from HI and MI. Finally a second cavalry charge on the other flank settled the battle, with a Byzantine MI succumbing.

Started the tourney with 2 losses, and finished with 3 victories, for a total of 25 banners, will that be enough? Only time will tell!

    Round 3 -  GI04 Battle of Faventia 542 AD

Goths:       RiverWanderer   6 (25 blocks lost)
Byzantine: Toganalper         3 (30 blocks lost)

Constantian's cavalry dominated the opening turns, rapidly eliminated the Osthrogoth's heavies and suppressing their  right flank for a time. The Ostrogoth's had better fortune on the other flank, repelling Alexander's attack and evening the score. The final struggle came between Valaris' warriors and Constantian's cavalry and infantry from the centre, with both sides hoping for good dice as they traded furious attacks. In the end, luck was with the Osthrogoths' almost exhausted warriors.

Thanks to Toganalper for the game. My ISP went into a death spiral towards the end, hence 3 log files.

Round 2 Battle of Mugellum 542 AD

Ostrogoths (JR) - 6 banners taken, 18 blocks lost

Byzantines (Dan) - 2 banners taken, 31 blocks lost

Dan and I faced off last week but I’m a little late in posting our result – apologies!

Given the Byzantine edge in cavalry, I decided to hang back in my superior terrain and peck away with my Light Bowmen until an opportunity presented itself for my hilltop warbands to strike.  I opened with an illegal declaration of Darken the Skies (without the required Leadership card) but scored only one hit on 18 dice, proving cheaters never prosper.  Dan in turn started working the flanks, hitting the Auxiliaries on my right, inflicting heavy losses, but taking some himself in turn.  He did the same on my left, but here at least my LB could retire and sneak back to the line when my cards allowed.

Dan scored first, eliminating two Aux units before I scored a banner.  However, Line Command allowed me to move nine units forward (and one back!), setting up the play of Foot Onslaught by my Warriors in the center. This netted seven hits, including the elimination of a Medium Infantry unit, but now my warbands were out in the open with Byzantine heavy cavalry bearing down.

Dan’s reply wiped out one batch of Warriors, but Totila was able to scamper back to a supporting unit.  He then led an attack against the cav, who were unable to retire due to the proximity of the board edge.  This proved devasting, killing a Heavy Bow Cav, a Medium Bow Cav, and a Medium infantry, and chasing Cyprian off the map.

Totila was still leading two full-strength warbands, with the left flank of the Byzantine line in his sights. Dan peppered me with bow fire to no effect.  I followed up with Leadership Any Section, paired with the Foot Onslaught Inspired Action, to take down an Aux unit and a unit of Light Bowmen, completing an Ostrogoth  6-2 victory.

I think this is a nicely asymmetric scenario, overwhelmed by not-so-nicely asymmetric dice and cards.  After that first turn, I was consistently rolling hits well above expectation, and I had an embarrassingly great hand all game – I opened with Cry Havoc and picked up Mounted Charge soon after, and never needed either.   It was great fun playing and chatting with Dan – we talked a lot about the period and I still owe him a couple book recommendations!  Looking forward to a return match.

Here are the files with our Mugellum game -  not sure why they're not appearing in the original post (but I see them when I try to edit the post).  Hmmm.

    Round 3 gheintze vs dan.o.becker
    Battle of Faventia

gheintze 6 banners, 13 blocks lost
    dan.o.becker 3 banners, 29 blocks lost

After moving into position, the goths played mounted charge on their right (followed by rally, order medium troops, and cry havoc). Although the attacks weren't as effective as hoped, they eventually netted four banners.  However, this left the goth cavalry in a vulnerable position and a mounted charge by the byzantines eliminated three goth cav units.  However, the damage was already done and the remaining goth HC was able to finish off an isolate aux unit and then survive an attack from a SHC.  The final banner was earned on a double red square from the goth archers on a SHC.
