Historical Background
After the success of his Lucanian allies against a poorly conceived Thurian offensive at the Battle of Laus, the Syracusan tyrant Dionysus I invaded southern Italy to subjugate the Italiote defensive league (Greek colonists living in southern Italy) that had been formed to check his growing power. Upon hearing that the Italiote League forces under the command of Heloris were marching to relieve his siege of Caulonia, Dionysus abandoned his siege and surprised the composite force in a dawn assault near the Elleporus River. The Syracusans crushed the isolated vanguard of Heloris and his elite hoplites before smashing into the disorganized Italiote forces as they attempted to form lines of battle and join the action; the panicked survivors of this assault entrenched on nearby high ground but were surrounded and surrendered the next day. With his biggest threat neutralized, Dionsysus was then free to resume his offensive operations and soon gained control over large parts of southern Italy.
