Historical Background
Motivated by an alliance with the Syracusan tyrant Dionysus to take up arms against neighboring Greek colonists, the Lucanian hill tribes gathered a large force in preparation to fight against a comparable force of Italiote Greeks advancing against them. Buoyed by an initial Lucanian retreat away from the coastal plains, the Thurians hastily set out to pursue the Lucanians without waiting for allied reinforcements and were ambushed near the mouth of the Laus River. According to the historian Diodorus, the Thurians were quickly overwhelmed and lost as many as 10,000 soldiers, with only a small group of survivors able to escape the slaughter. Many of those who escaped surrendered to the nearby warships of Dionysus' brother Leptines, who ransomed these survivors and brokered peace between the Lucanians and Italiotes, against the wishes of Dionysus.
