Historical Background
In 154 BC, the fragile peace in Hispania shattered. The powerful Celtiberian city of Segeda, belonging to the Belli tribe, began expanding its borders and constructing a massive defensive wall. Rome, viewing this as a direct violation of the treaties established by Gracchus years earlier, demanded tribute and military contingents. The Segedians refused, arguing that the Romans themselves had previously granted them exemptions. Unwilling to negotiate, the Roman Senate resolved to enforce its will by the sword.
The following year, the praetor Quintus Fulvius Nobilior marched against the rebels with an army of nearly 30,000 men. Realizing their unfinished walls could not withstand a Roman siege, the Segedians abandoned their city, fleeing with their families to seek refuge with the neighboring Arevaci tribe. The Arevaci welcomed them and formed a powerful coalition, electing a Segedian named Carus—a man renowned for his tactical brilliance—as their supreme commander.
Carus wasted no time. Three days after his election, he mustered 20,000 warriors and 500 horsemen, leading them into the dense forests along the Roman line of march. As Nobilior’s massive column advanced through the treacherous terrain, Carus sprang his trap. The Celtiberians fell upon the disorganized Romans in a devastating ambush. The battle was fierce, but the ferocious barbarian assault eventually shattered the Roman lines, inflicting a crushing defeat and slaying over 6,000 Roman citizens.
However, the Celtiberian victory was bittersweet. As the warriors engaged in a chaotic and disorderly pursuit, the Roman cavalry guarding the rear baggage train launched a desperate counterattack. In the ensuing clash, the heroic Carus was killed, alongside thousands of his men, allowing the remnants of the Roman army to survive the night. Nobilior's catastrophic defeat occurred on August 23rd, the festival of Vulcan, a date that would forever remain cursed in the Roman military calendar.
