Note: For clarity, Left and Right refer to the sides of the battlefield, not the commanders point of view.

Marco - Niger - 5
Dawnreader - Severus - 7

Battle began with ranged attacks from Severus, with Niger immediately withdrawing in MC on the Left. More maneuvering and ranged fire, before Niger DoubleTimed off the hills straight into the opposing leaderless line center, destroying a HI despite an early FirstStrike. More maneuvering gained Niger another Banner, but Severus closed in with a LineAdvance, finally taking a MI. Back and forth fighting on the Right brought Niger more Banners, taking the score to 4-1 in his favor. Finally another LineAdvance brought Severus’ MI and HI into the center and gained three banners in one turn. A big turn for Severus! More battle in the Center, as Severus took more banners and Niger was unable to answer. A last ditch attempt by Niger to grab Banners resulted in one more, before Severus finished the game with MC action on the left.

Marco - Severus - 7
Dawnreader - Niger - 1
Battle commenced with Severus using OrderMounted on the Left to eliminate the MC there, then a LineAdvance to bring MI and HI up to threaten the LI in the center. A DoubleTime by Niger on the Right eliminated an AUX, but failed to eliminate any high value targets. The resulting action saw Niger pull a FirstStrike but still lose three banners and his own life! With only one Banner to go, the Severus moved his MI and HI in the center, to eliminate the LI trapped there. Thanks Dawnreader for flexible scheduling!

Round 1
Player 1 (Niger) – Rams1984 – 2 banners won
Player 2 (Severus) – Soul1st – 7 banners won

Severus attacked the Niger line and got two banners for light units, but suffered also. After that Severus attacked on their left flank with the cavalry.
Niger responded to no effect and also losing some of his own cavalry. The game came to a conclusion when Niger came from the hills to attack.

Round 2
Player 1 (Niger) – Soul1st - 3 banners won
Player 2 (Severus) – Rams1984 – 7 banners won

Much the same like the previous game only with more caution on both sides. Superior forces concluded the battle in favor of Severus.

Match 1

Player 1 (Niger) – Warrick – 4 banners won
Player 2 (Severus) – Milla – 7 banners won

Severus starts with a cavalry charge on the left flank, attacking and destroying one of Niger's medium cavalry units.  The centre of both armies then exchange some ineffectual ranged combat.  Severus then advances his entire foot army forwards, inflicting heavy damage on several of Niger's light infantry.  A cavalry charge by Niger results in another of his medium cavalry units being wiped out.  Severus then responds with a cavalry charge of his own - however fierce fighting by one of Niger's leaders manages to rout two of Severus's cavalry, albeit with the loss of his own heavy infantry.  Left without his troops, the leader then chooses to retreat from the battle field.

Niger's hilltop archers manage to pick off another of the weakened cavalry units.  However two of his light infantry succumb to close combat with Severus's archers.  With the path to the hills now clear, Severus advances his foot units to engage in close combat.  Several rounds of skirmishing leads to losses on both sides.

With Severus now close to victory, more close combat in the hills leads to one of Niger's medium infantry being destroyed, and victory is awarded to Severus.

Match 2

Player 1 (Niger) – Milla – 7 banners won
Player 2 (Severus) – Warrick – 6 banners won

Severus once again starts with a left flank cavalry charge.  Skrmishes with Niger's cavalry leads to a loss of one of Severus's cavalry.  Severus then orders his units to march double time, advancing towards the hills and wiping out two of Niger's light infantry.  Niger's two remaining cavalry on his right flank engage in an attack which results in both of them being destroyed.

Severus then presses forward with his advance towards the hills.  Heavy fighting from both sides results in one of Severus's medium infantry succumbing to Niger's attacks.  Further skirmishes on Severus's left flank results in the loss of his heavy cavalry, with the leader retreating through the woods.  A hail of arrows cut him down before he reaches the safety of his troops.

Severus's cavalry launches another attack on Niger's heavy infantry, however a surprise first stike from Niger cuts one of the cavalry units down.  Severus's remaining cavalry presses on with the attack, killing both Niger's heavy infantry and their leader.

With both sides reeling from heavy losses, Niger decides to leave the safety of the hills with four of his infantry encircling on of Severus's weakened heavy infantry.  A series of attacks routs this unit, with Niger claming victory on the battlefield.

Game 1
FoxK (Niger) 7 banners
GomJabbar (Severus) 2 banners

Severus' strategy was a solid advance up the middle supported by a sweeping cavalry attack around the rear of the Niger forces. The assault started well but the card draw and dice gods were against him and FoxK's Niger forces pushed through the center and obliterated Severus' forces including killing Severus himself.

Niger tried to retreat back their light troops and hold the hills. But FoxK's Severus cavalry quickly swept around the rear and severely punished any retreating Niger units from the hill including killing one of the Niger leaders.

Unlike Round 1 of the tournament where my dice were on fire, in this match my (GomJabbar) dice were terrible. They did turn around near the end of the second game but it was too little too late. Congrats FoxK.

P1 kwofford (NIger) 7 bannersP2 boredbeyondbelief (Severus) 6 banners Severus began with a medium advance, reposition MI in the center and right and advancing the MC on the left.  NIger reorganized sending LI from the center into the woods, and refusing the MC by withdrawing them to cover the rear of the center infantry. After a prolonged exchange of missile fire, Severus advanced on the right, killing the LI on Niger’s left for the first two banners. Niger responded with missile fire, driving back the assault. Severus advanced on his left again, while Niger reorganized to tighten up his lines. Severus dropped a double time to renew his assault in the center, but came off the worst.  Niger counter attacked, charging off the hill with MI, A, and HI.  Each came away with two banners, but Niger remained in control of the hills while Severus’ center was devastated. Niger narrowly dodged death and rejoined his A to lead a final charge off the hill and completing the destruction of Severus’ center. Severus renewed his attack on the right, enveloping Niger’s right and center to pick off a couple of stragglers. Niger responded by pocketing Severus’ heavy cavalry, against hills defended by A, finishing both the HC and leader as he tried to escape for the 6th and 7th banners.  Fun game and a real nail biter, with Severus suffering from worse than  average die rolls. P1 boredbeyondbelief (Niger) 5 bannersP2 kwofford (Severus) 7 banners Severus began with an utter ridiculous hand that included two mounted charge cards, a 3 left and a 2 left card. Not much doubt about the plan here. Severus advanced his MC on his left, scoring an early kill by driving one of Niger’s MC from the field and severely weakening the other. Niger reorganized and responded with a volley of missile fire, while Severus continued advancing  on the left. Niger advanced into the woods in an attempt to break up the cavalry advance, but the first of Severus’ mounted charge cards carried the day. Skirmishing from the woods, Niger managed to kill an A but Severus responded by using the second mounted charge to complete the envelopment.  Niger’s center broken from behind, he dropped a line command and attacked from the remaining center in an attempt to reverse the envelopment.  Severus lost another MC but mauled the counterattack, taking three more banners.  NIger resumed skirmishing, while Severus advanced his center and right infantry on Niger’s remaining center and left. Niger counterattacked with I am Spartacus with the banner count at Niger 6, Severus 5, but Severus dropped a first strike and killed a HI and leader in one exchange for the win.  I had an utterly ridiculous starting hand here, and won with a first strike.  It was a nail-biter, with a surprising reverse at the end. Thanks again for a great pair of games!

Match 2
Player 1 (Niger) – JohnS –  3 banners won
Player 2 (Severus) – Scrum4You – 7 banners won

The game started with both sides trading ranged fire. Niger retreated to be mostly out of range on the hills. The game continued slowly until Niger boldly attacked with MC on an exposed LB on Severus' frontline. Severus took the bait, surrounded the MC and destroyed it, at the cost of having units up against Niger-occupied hills. Severus finished the assualt with units attacking Niger's front line on the hills with both sides taking hits.

Severus then advanced a force of MC/HC on left flank. Niger responded with Mounted Charge, attacking the lead MC and an exposed A in the middle. The A was knocked down to one block, the now wounded MC retreated to his baseline, and Niger's MC's bonus CC yielded a second wounded Severus MC that had to retreat. Severus' left flank attempt had been effectively blunted.

Severus played CounterAttack to bring his healthy flank cavalry into effect and took out Niger's MC, then advanced on a Niger L that was weakened and evaded. At this point, Severus had 2 MCs and one A down to 1 block, but Niger had weakened L and MC against their baseline and under threat from healthy Severus cavalry.

Niger played a nice Leadership Any and advanced off the hills to threaten the weakened Severus units and a H. He took out the H with one roll, and the weakened A, which tied the score at 2-2, but the MC evaded and lived.

Severus played Spartacus and activated H/MC/LB/Leader. He wiped out the L and MC pinned on their baseline, making it 4-2. Niger attacked the left flank of Severus' line hoping to catch up. Each side lost one unit. Severus played Order Heavy to attack pieces between the lines with an H and an HC coming in from the back, and wiped out an M with a lucky roll. Niger tried to get one more banner by moving an LB in range of 2 MCs with one block, but ranged combat missed. Severus played another Order Heavy and finished off an H with another lucky roll. This ended the game at 7-3.

An unusual game in that there was never any major infantry line engagement. Interesting scenario and good play by JohnS made this very enjoyable.

Round 1
Player 1 (Niger) – Zocchi – 7 banners won
Player 2 (Severus) – Jawanick – 6 banners won

Severus tries to attack from his left by infiltrating with horses trying to surprise his opponents from behind the forest. Niger tries to maintain its positions by attacking from a distance. The first attack of the cavalry scores, but a double “double time” brings the situation back to parity. A few skirmishes and Severus's cavalry fails. But there are too many heavy units on the field. Part of the hill is lost. Niger are on the defensive until they look for an opening with the leader. After some clashes we find ourselves in a draw, and it is there that from the Niger side we hear shouting: "a horse, my kingdom for a horse..." ...not to escape but to attack ...and so the match ends

Round 2
Player 1 (Niger) – Jawanick - 6 banners won
Player 2 (Severus) – Zocchi – 7 banners won

roles reversed but same initial tactic... cavalry pressing on the flank. We continue with ranged attacks. Severus tries to climb up to take the two light units, always under the rain of Niger arrows, which hides his units in difficulty very well. The central units move well on the cavalry which is routed, so does Severus trying to conquer the hill to be able to start with heavy attacks. And at the end of the battle we try everything for everything, like the previous one.

Excellent rival Nick, really very good at unit’s management. Thanks to him for the two splendid matches!

Round 2 - return match

Renaud (Niger) 7 banners, 26 blocks lost
vs
Michal (Severus) 5 banners, 33 blocks lost

Michal started with Mounted card on the left, expertly moving his leader from HC to MC to provide support to his lead MC elements, but he still could only manage contact with one on my unsupported MCs (that had First Strike but only scored 1 hit) and while he reduced it to 1 block, he didn't get to follow up. On the next turn, I attacked with the other MC and killed his lead MC with my 1-block MC, then attacked and reduced another MC of his. Eventually he did kill both of MCs, but his attack petered out at even losses as my HI with leader moved to stabilize that area. In the center, Michael repeated my early Double Time attack on the LI of the last game, but with far more success (2 killed out of 3 attacked vs. 0 killed for me last game), but to some extent that was the high mark in the center for him. Successful play of a couple of Line Commands blunted his attacks on the ridge line. The best he achieved was reducing an MI to 1 block, but it was pulled from the line in time and never was eliminated. In fact, it did attract his 2-block MC with commander from the left flank, but a lucky shot from my LB reduced the MC to 1 block and I was also able to put my MI out of reach and protected by moving my left flank MC. Eventually, I did manage to kill that MC, though not the leader, when it returned to its flank and tried to escape. As his situation seemed rather difficult, Michal rolled the dice (so to speak) and moved again against my center on the ridge with his two HI and a couple of other units, and in the next turn played Clash of Shields, but even with the 2 additional dice, he did not manage to break my line, while I scored my last banner on the blow back, rolling 3 dice and getting 3 hits to kill my 7th enemy unit (7-5,33 enemy blocks vs 26). Overall, I think we both had decent cards, but my dice luck was better than his at key moments, including at the very last. It's just that it can be difficult to take the ridge.

NOTE: This should probably be recorded on the score charts as Game 2 as we seem to have played the wrong sides for the Game1 Player 1 / Player 2 sides

scrum4you (Niger) 3 banners won

John S (Severus) 7 banners won

The early battle was when the cavalry clashed on my left as I eliminated the two MC there for the cost of one of my MC. I had one MOUNTED CHARGE in hand but pulled my cavalry back a bit for the time being. I did not have many good cards for the center so just used my LIGHT TROOPS cards for ranged fire. Ranged fire was the order of the day as both sides let loose arrows with some success. I moved forward in the center to threaten the two forward light units that could not evade. But soon a MOVE FIRE MOVE adjusted Niger’s lines and the hills was where they now defended. I was not too keen on taking on that position. A bit later some of my cavalry engaged two light units one of which evaded and the other which was double flagged out of the woods. On the same turn, I got two hits on an HI on the hills near Niger’s right. I had both MOUNTED CHARGEs in hand now and four cavalries on my left near the enemy baseline. Luckily a DARKEN THE SKY by my opponent did little damage. My first MOUNTED CHARGE went in and killed off two light units on their own baseline. This gave me a 4 to 1 lead. A COUNTERATTACK with the lone remaining enemy MC took out my HC and double flagged and inflicted 2 hits on one MC with my leader which forced it back through the woods into the center. An effective attack as now my leader and one MC was out of position. I now only have three cavalries left for my second MOUNTED CHARGE and two of my MC are down to 1 block. But in goes the attack and I force the HI with leader off the hills and then kill the unit. The leader evades off the board. It is a good thing he did as I kill off the last MC and would have had a 4d attack against that leader. A LINE COMMAND cuts off my 1 block MC with leader and that unit is killed off. The leader survives the 1d check and the 3d escape. He is one lucky fellow as he has lived through several leader rolls. I then play I AM SPATACUS and roll very well with two red, two blue a green and leader result. The blue and green and the most important. I cutoff an AI on the hill with two MC and move a leader onto an AI. Two 3d attacks does the trick and it is over. We spent nearly 2 hours on this game and well played it was. My opponent, John, did very well even though he does not have many games under his belt. I had the better of the luck for sure with both MOUNTED CHARGES in my hand and my great I AM SPARTACUS rolls along with timely combat rolls and the left flank leader surviving the battle. We are set to play game 2 on Saturday and I am looking forward to it.

Match 1
Tuscan Centurion - Simon S (Niger) - 3 banners
Riverwander - Mark B (Severus) 7 banners

First phase was several rounds of ranged fire with Severus getting the better of it, culminating in a brief foray of Severan Heavy Infantry to finish off one of Niger's Light Infantry units.

By mid-game, both sides had very different plans in place, to judge from the subsequent action. As Severus' cavalry took the initiative on the board-left, Niger's infantry line advanced en-masse to attack in the centre. Niger's right flank was destroyed in a cavalry charge, leaving his medium and heavy infantry to exact as much vengeance as possible in the centre before the Severan cavalry chased down a retreated Light Infantry for the final banner.

Match 2
Riverwander - Mark B (Niger) - 4 banners
Tuscan Centurion - Simon S (Severus) 7 banners

In this game, Severus was immediately ready to threaten a cavalry charge on Niger's weak right flank. Niger's response was to retreat the cavalry and offer infantry instead. Severus still attacked, but the outcome was a roughly equal exchange, the remaining Severan cavalry retiring back to the safety of their lines.

Niger's line of battle was now very disjointed as result of those manoeuvres. The next Severan attack came against Niger's own group on the right of the board. Niger's Auxilia were tempted off the hill to attack a vulnerable Severan formation but to no avail, soon the banner line was 6:3 in Severan favour. Leading a last desperate Heavy Infantry attack, Niger managed to secure one more banner before being finally overwhelmed.

I had really good cards and fortunate rolls in game 2 and my cavalry played a key part. I was trying to put enough pressure on his right flank to draw units away from the hill and it eventually worked. Used evade and good rolls for me to finish off the fight.

OT 2024 Round 2 : 411 Issus

Game 1

Gonzo (Niger) 7
BrentS (Severus) 6

Severus went straight for the obvious opening and sent his left flank cavalry against the exposed Nigerian cavalry but they First Struck a flag retreat, resulting in a bloodless opening skirmish, then retreated their cavalry to safety behind the hills and their infantry. Severus next Julianed against the pinned Light Infantry, trapping and killing one but the others Light Trooped away to safety. All probe and response, subtley shifting the formations, looking for a chink in the defense (which is what this scenario is all about). In response very accurate fire, including use of a Spartacus, decimated the exposed Severian heavies. Action then shifted to the Severian flanks, where he pushed up against the lights in the hills and forest, hoping to exploit weak links in the lines. Even unit losses on both sides but the Nigerians succeeded in neutralising the cavalry, including the embarrassing death of the Heavy Cav to light bowmen in close combat. On the right the Severians did finally get a foothold on the hills and in bloody melee killed Niger on a double helmet (never a satisfying result). At 6 banners to 4 and with a beachhead finally secured on the hills (no beach actually involved) it looked like Severus had it but Niger Double Timed off the hills to take 3 banners in one play for a dramatic and well deserved victory. Great tense, close game.

Game 2

BrentS (Niger) 7
Gonzo (Severus) 4

Similar opening moves, with the Severian cavalry advancing against the Nigerian cav, who tucked into the protection of the infantry lines. This wasn’t just a replay, though, but a regrouping for a Mounted Charge against the Severian Cav. Risky and blunted somewhat by a Severian First Strike but whittled away the massed Severian cav and although knocked to 1 block, a couple of Nigerian Cav were able to escape back to their lines, job done. Much cagey long distance ranged attacking took place as the Severians tried to slowly move through the protection of the forest on their left to prise open that flank of the hills. They finally sprung their assault with a Double Time - Spartacus follow through. Against the odds the Nigerian heavy there survived multiple attacks and Spartacused back (drawn immediately after the reshuffle!), killing enough enemies to swing the battle in their favour, 6 banners to 2. Time for the Nigerians to mirror the play from the previous game and Double Time out of the hills. The Severians made a bold Mounted Charge with their remaining cav into the rear to mop up some of the 1 block units hiding there, forcing a leader to flee off the baseline, but too late, as Niger took out an Auxilia for the winning banner.

This is a hard scenario for Severus against an experienced Niger and requires some patience and luck, most of which was on my side (the luck, not the patience). Thanks as always to Joe for some enjoyable and hard fought games.

Severus was the first to charge up the middle. Although the attack was rebuffed, some damage was done. Niger then charged off the hills but the counter by Severus's cavalry was enough to finish the job.

Andrey (Gileforn) is an incredible player and a very responsive person, it was he who taught me how to play through Vassal and inspired me to take part in the tournament. Playing with Andrey is always very difficult and incredibly interesting!

Match 1
Player 1 (Niger) – Lornlane – 4 banners won
Player 2 (Severus) – Gileforn – 7 banners won

Andrey loves an attacking sharp game and my army immediately began to suffer losses. I preferred to resort to a tactical retreat in order to preserve the vanguard and prepare for a counterattack. After the first moves, a firefight ensued, but it did not bear serious fruit to the opposing sides. On the fourth move, Andrei launched an offensive with heavy and medium infantry, but was unable to dislodge my detachments from the hills. Well, in my turn, I made a terrible mistake, which cost me the loss of cavalry on the right flank, a deep breakthrough of the enemy cavalry and the party as a whole.

Match 2
Player 2 (Niger) – Gileforn – 4 banners won
Player 1 (Severus) – Lornlane – 7 banners won

We played the second game immediately after the first one. I set myself the task of winning with any score in order to earn at least some points. I took the lead immediately, but Andrey, thanks to a clever maneuver, very soon seized the initiative and pulled ahead. At that moment, I got a little nervous. But still, thanks to the qualitative and quantitative superiority of the troops, I managed to win, and luck helped me repeat the even of the first match.

R2G2 IssusSteve T – Niger, 7 banners, 16 blocks lostScipio 1 Zama – Severus, 3 banners, 24 locks lost.Battle commenced with the usual missile fire, with many light infantry killed but all the weakened units on both sides were able to escape to their rear. My Nigerans had refused their weak right flank cavalry by bringing them adjacent to my HI, and when the Severan cavalry launched their mounted charge, in the ensuing melee the support of my HI (and some good dice) enabled an equal loss of 3 MC units each. Then the Nigeran HI and LB double timed to cut off the rear of a Severan MC, which was destroyed by the HI while the LB were clearly born forest fighters, eliminating the evading one block Severan HC and killing the ldr (6-3). The Severan infantry advanced, but first loss was one of those units (7-3). Thanks to Mike for a tough and, despite the score, very close game that could have easily gone the other way.

Renaud (Severus, attributed randomly) 7 banners scored, 24 blocks lost
Michael (Niger) 4 banners scored, 32 blocks lost

The card gods gave me a double time to start and I rushed my 2 HI and 2 MI in the center to catch those taunting skirmishers. The dice gods laughed at me. I scored 2 hits out of 18 rolls including 9 leader-supported rolls. Then Michal played Lights and the LI escaped through their lines. To add insult to injury, his shooting over 2 rounds reduced Severus' HI to 2 blocks and also reduced an MI. I rallied them, and he shot down the MI over 2 rounds. Back to square 1. Then I used Inspired Leader left to move the cavalry wing and position them for a Mounted Charge, which worked rather well, especially when followed up with another Mounted Charge a couple of rounds later, and gave me a significant edge. A Line Command nabbed an evading 3-block LB (I think) with 3 green hits out of 3 die rolls. A second Line Command, assaulting the ridge, was less successful, to say the least. I even hesitated to finish the attack, but did, and not only I didn't eliminate my target, but my 2 HI were reduced to 2 blocks each on the battle-backs, and then both were taken down by a daring MI after Niger took their lead. At 6-4, I had kept Spartacus in hand since the beginning. An HI attack on the right did little damage, but my MI under Severus scored 3 hits and 2 flags on Niger's own 4-block MI. Fortunately I had closed the retreat door with an AUX and the 2nd flag could not be ignored, giving me the victory. I definitely had good cards, with dice luck being a little more variable, but overall sufficient. Looking forward to the return match.

Issus- Match 1

Mike Stanley (Niger) – 7 banners – won.

Stephen Thompson (Severus) – 6 banners

Most of the fighting took place on the right side of the board.  (At game’s end it turned out that Steve wasn’t able to draw many cards to order his Cavalry.)

Initial ranged fire (mostly ineffective, especially Niger’s guys) led quickly to a full-blown brawl on the right side of the board, eventually eliminating all of Severus’ Aux, MI and HI on that flank, plus a HI and MI from the center.  Niger lost everyone on that (his left) flank except his MC and Niger himself.

As noted, little happened on the other (cavalry) flank, where we each lost only one MC.

The coup de gras was accomplished by Niger and his MC, which eliminated a MI that had first been reduced to 1 block by one of Niger’s MI.

Round 2 - Match 2
Player 1 (Niger) TTK: 4 banners won
Player 2 (Severus) alecrespi: 7 banners won

Pretty much all 7 points with the cavalry (Severus) on the left side.
At a certain point the dice results were decisive to take the points of the units left with 1 single block.
