Vassal Dice rolling

Within Vassal, when you roll the dice, especially when only rolling 1 it's not so obvious that it's happened.

If you click 1 dice, get a CAV, click again and get another CAV nothing actually changes. I end up double checking the server text...

It would be nice if there was a clear way to indicate that it's a new roll. I'm not up with the limitations of the engine but something like having all the current set cleared to be replaced by a spinning dice image that resolved to the actually result. I've not seen any moving graphics so I suspect that's out but you get the idea.

cheers,

Dave.

Hi Dave,
nice point!
I think every Vassal user have found this at least 1 time in their life.
I know it can "annoy" someone but what about adding sounds to better understand what's happening?
We could even add sounds for:
1) drawing - playing cards (a sort of "flip" sound")
2) rolling dice (rolling dice sound)
3) hitting a unit (a "battle" sound or a "fire" sound) linked to CTRL + H command key
4) recovering a unit (linked to CTRL + R command key)

Let me know what do you think about it.
Actually I do have some WAV files that can fit them.

Allessandro,
That would help, as a programmer myself I often come across users mashing a button because they don't see anything happening so this just stood out.

cheers,

Dave.

Well, just tested it, it works :)
Therefore post all here, which sounds would be usefull
(and maybe a link to the sound).

The .wav files should be not to big and i want not to add to much sounds ;)

Only negative effect, you must setup all existing scenarios again, if you want the sound :(
but good thing, we are at start of CCNapo,
and we have therefore only 15 official and some fanmade
scenarios

Hi All,

Although not a diligent Vassal player myself ( ), I like this idea...

5) playing cards : specific sounds upon some (section, bombard, charge etc..)
6) reshuffle button
7) end turn button

in fact all actions with a log associated note..I'll search some sounds...

cheers

I don't object to sounds as long as they are only an additional clue to what is happening and not a replacement for visual cues. VASSAL is a great platform for the Hearing impaired, as well as those playing in environments where sound is not an option. Playing at work comes to mind :) but many people also play whilst the family is watching TV, or pursuing other actives, and it can be rather selfish to sit with headphones on.
I know that most people like to play whilst chatting on Google chat, and as the originator of that concept, along with Billben, way back when he was developing the first Battle Cry module, I understand that most of you probably have headphones on anyway.
The Bottom like is that adding sound is a nice option, but it will not address the problem, we still need to see, visually, that the die has been cast.

Cheers
Chris

Chris is spot on, but it's still a nice feature and presumably it's something that could be configurable.

Anyway what about Pascals dice in his sig?

:)

Ok,
have a sound for dice roll,
for flip/discard/shuffle cards.
If someone have still a short good sound for End Turn,
this would make also sense.

More sounds are only gimmickry (my mind),
and should not used in a simple vassal module :)

Ok, i used this "drum.wav" for EndTurn :)

I will sent the next update to Alessandro, to test it, before we starting
with the scenario setup again ;)

If someone else would also test it, let me know.
Or you have other ideas/sound files, to use,
let me also know :)
