Mike Stanley (Triumvirate) 4 Banners

Gonzo (Republican) 8 Banners

Triumvirate starts with generally effective missile fire on their left with Darken the Skies. Brutus advances the Republican left with Line command. Augustas comes out to meet him and rolls terrible. Brutus's legions grind them up. Triumph had multiple cav cards, gathered and chrged twice. Generally the legions held up, but the Republican Cav lost 2 full units to a damaged Tr Cav. Tr left moves and kill a couple of Rep units, but to late as Rep left finishes the Romans, take the camps, and send Augustus fleeing off the board. Mike missed the key rolls.

Mike Stanley (Republican) 4 Banners

Gonzo (Triumvirate) 8 Banners

Republican left advances, Triumph right turtles around the cmp. Republican assaults it and bloodbath ensues. Back and forth with Triump cav charge thrown in. Triumph gets more medals but crippled on that side. As Brutus kills and takes a cmp hex, Triumph left pins and kills enough leaderless Republican for the win.
Thanks to my buddy Mike for fun game and bearing much bad luck.

EZPickins (Triumvirate) 6 Banners

Kartigan (Republican) 8 Banners

Triumvirate starts with moderately effective missile fire on their left with Darken the Skies, while the Republicans did minor shuffling of no immediate consequence.  This was followed up by a Triumvirate charge with their forward units on the left, thanks to a Double Time card that shattered the Republican right.  Cassius led a Counterattack though to pushback and stabilize before the command posts fell.  A Line Command card allowed Antony to lead another charge in the Left-Center for the Triumvirate.  The fighting grew quite intense there, with heavy casualties on both sides.  A Mounted Charge from the Republican Cavalry managed to roll well and push back the assault in on that flank and in the center, and also killed a Triumvirate Leader.  This made the score 7-5 in favor of the Republicans, but they did not have any easy targets in sight.  After some further re-posistioning by both sides, the Triumvirate managed to score a 6th point, while the Republicans got their 8th.  It was a close game overall with a final score of 8-6.  Almost the entirety of the action took place on the Triumvirate Left or the Center, barely anything from either side moved the entire game on the Triumvirate Right.  The Triumvirate had their hand falter at some critical moments, which allowed some Republican units to escape destruction.  The game went on for 8 turns for each side (16 total turns).

Thanks to EZPickins for a good game and showing me the ropes on VASSAL, I look forward to our second game.

GoTigerSSC vs. Rand

R1G1

GoTigerSSC – Triumvirate - 5 Banners
Rand – Republican - 8 Banners

Darken the Sky causes heavy damage against a Republican Medium Infantry manning the ramparts on the Left Flank, and forces them to withdraw. Triumvirate forces move down from the hill line, their heavy infantry destroying one medium infantry and crippling another. Ranged fire from supporting units also cause damage amongst Light Republican Infantry who retreat into their camps. The Republicans rally enough troops to replenish their damaged ranks and the Triumvirate move forward on their right flank, causing heavy damage to Brutus’ personal unit. Cassius personally leads a counterattack from the center of the battlefield towards the Triumvirate’s left flank, where a Triumvirate leader and his heavy infantry unit are destroyed by cavalry. This begins frenzied fighting in the ramparts as Republican and Triumvirate units counter and parry along the fortifications. Cassius’ leadership is vital in the fighting, leading immense support to the Republican units that surround him, however Cassius’s unit is destroyed, and he is forced to withdraw to his camp at the rear of the battlefield. In a desperate push, Triumvirate heavy infantry under the command of Anthony cut their way through two different enemy units and seize a strong position on the ramparts. A final ‘Mounted Charge’ by Republican Cavalry chases down a rival cavalry unit on the edge of the marches and destroys them for the victory.

A very close game, thanks to GoTigerSSC.

Mark McG (Triumvirate) 8 banners
Lou (Republic) 5 banners

Things went pretty well for the Republic for quite a while, taking a 4-2 lead, and repulsing every Triumvir move.
Then in 2 magic turns, Antony put it all together, taking 6 banners for the cost of 1. The last turn cavalry charge was flawless, eliminating everything it touched.

Round 1 Game 1

gheintze (Republic) 3 Banners

John S (Triumvirate) 8 Banners

Geoff used DOUBLE TIME early to hit the units on the wall on my right but had little success and I was able to take out 6 units here for the loss of only three infantries. I then used my own DOUBLE TIME and Brutus rushed off his section of walls to cut down two medium infantries to end the matter.

Round 1 Game 2

gheintze (Triumvirate) 5 Banners

John S (Republic) 8 Banners

I also used Antony's forces to hit the wall and killed off two medium infantries. But Cassius lead a furious counterattack and played the hero. In spite of my 5d FIRST STRIKE Cassius killed off a medium and heavy infantry with both units being at full strength and Antony fell with his unit. I was able to regroup a bit and also took a risk as my unnamed leader went forward with one medium infantry and killed off two weakened medium infantries. The battle continued on the Triumvirate right and I lost the lone medium infantry along with the leader as cavalry cutoff that unit, but it bagged one cavalry in return. Geoff could not kill off a medium infantry with two cavalry attacks but the 4d BB finished off the cavalry for the win.

A rough night for Geoff as the dice did favor me.

Round 1 - 403 Philippi 1

Game 1

BrentS (Triumvirate) - Banners 8
stevent (Republican) - Banners 2

A rough day at the office for the self-acclaimed liberators of Rome. Their right moved to engage the advance Triumvirate left who had the better of the exchange, killing two medium infantry and forcing the Republican lights back to the baseline. The Republicans did a good job escaping those lights with a MFM but the Triumvirate responded with a Counterattack, using the mobility of the card to get their own lights into the Republican camps. I expected them to die in an even exchange of banners, but the cheeky buggers took the camp banners, made a clean getaway and survived until the end of the battle. The Republicans diverted from that vulnerable flank by Double Timing on their left, killing the Triumvirate auxilia but losing Brutus to a double helmet on battle back. That precipitated a Republican collapse on that side and Octavian used the Julian legion mobility to chase their fleeing infantry to their remaining camp, where the last Republicans died defending their patriotic idealism.

An unusual game. Leader loss is so critical in this game, not just for the banner it provides, and a double helmet is a brutal and unfair game changer. I think the game would have been a lot closer without it. I think the camp SSR is a bait that would rarely feature because it's too dangerous and uncertain to pull off,  but it played a major part this time, just due to circumstances and opportunity. I loved the narrative of the ballsy lights ransacking the Republican camps and getting away with it, surviving to brag to the legions about how they won the battle (not to mention the spoils). The cavalry never featured. I was holding a Mounted Charge from the beginning but gathering the Triumvirate cavalry takes time and the battle was over before it could come into play.

Thanks for a fun game, Steve. You were handed a lemon with the double helmet leader kill and it would have been a different battle without it. Looking forward to match 2.

Brent.

Very, very close game. The cavalry of Republicans was a key here - as well as Mounted Charge cards. I really thought I am going to be down much earlier but in the end it came to a very close finish. We messed a little rolls at the end, but finally Brutus & Cassius prevailed!

Completely different game. My range attacks sucked greatly. Republicans attacked Octavian positions with double time but were 1 hit short of overwhelming the Triumvirate. It backfired with 4 banners going to me. Then actions started on other flank, where I amassed overwhelming forces which managed to cross ramparts and win the game. Still, second banner for Ricardo was hilarious - my Heavy Infantry getting 2 hits from Light Infantry without leader!
