SF Colline Gate
Game 1
Polonus/Michal Samnites 2 banners, 20 blocks lost
Steve T Romans 5, banners, 16 blocks lost
The Samnites advanced on their right, and after receiving fairly ineffective missile fire, the Roman left and centre, with Sulla, repeatedly hurled themselves against the Samnite line, but were coming off second best (2-1). Crassus charged forward on the other flank, catching unawares the isolated Samnite cavalry, who were destroyed, and then occupied the Samnite camp (2-3), then moved to attack one block Samnite remnants in the rear – but meanwhile the Roman cavalry with Sulla leading a unit of auxila attacked again on the left, destroying the already weakened Samnite cavalry here and killing Pontius (2-5).
Game 2
Steve T Samnites 5 banners, 11 blocks lost
Polonus/Michal Romans 2 banners, 19 blocks lost
Again, the initial clash was on the Samnite right, with my troops hoping to get the better of the Romans before Sulla arrived – but I had soon lost an auxila and the MC (0-2). The flank was salvaged when a full strength Samnite MI arrived and were joined by Pontius, who led them forward in destroying two weakened Roman MI (2-2), and then trapped Sulla and his cavalry under the walls of Rome (4-2). Battle moved to the other flank, with the two sides approaching each other. The Samnite auxila and cavalry attacked first, and Crassus and his cavalry were destroyed by the Samnite cavalry (5-2).
Thanks to Michal for two tough games that were much closer than the scores, and could easily have gone the other way.
