the essence of the card is that you respond in kind to whatever your opponent did

What happens if the card previously played by your opponent is a "Center" card?
Option a) There's no alternative to center and therefore you are forced to play center.
or
Option b) the reverse of the center section is either sides of the board (Left or Right).
