Game 1
Gileforn (Austrian) 5 banners

Soul1st (French) 3 banners

Four cards are not too much to plan and it makes situation more dangerous and fun. Rush of the Austrians on there right was the first thing to be done. Than long battles at positions and finally one town has been captured. Twan played good but Austrians have better cards.

Game 2

Soul1st (Austrian) 4 banners

Gileforn (French) 5 banners

A really good game with opportunity to win by each side. The hardest situation was at Austrian staff because there were no cards for there cavalry and right flank. On the other hand they used really good there left and have done maximum with cavalry form that flank. French were lucky with leader fall back and missing by artillery, so they can made there last and winning attack.

Thanks to Twan for two very good games. As always.

Very close and fun game with both sides having chances to win!

As noted, the 4 card hands for each side make good cards vital to pulling out a win. As Austrian, I had a frustratingly reactive hand, with First Strike and Counterattack taking up some valuable slots. Those cards came in handy later as one would expect, but they did not help making a well-planned attack on the town hexes or their defenders. Mike's cards were equally frustrating, but I think his play was more coherent. The first 3 turns were me moving up first on my left, then in the center, and finally on the right. I was lucky to survive a risky move by Grenzers and Leader to a hill across the river when Mike attacked with both French Line Infantry there. The unit only suffered 1 block loss before retreating, but the 2LC failed and I was down a leader from French Turn 1. The move in the center only put more Austrians at risk for punishment, which they took, before the attack from the right forced a French Line Infantry into square and eliminated a French Light Cavalry unit and leader. Mike was able to even the score against the Austrian Cavalry despite plays of First Strike on successive turns. A Cavalry Charge card finally came to one of us and I was the lucky recipient. My die rolling was abysmal, so the game continued, but Mike's hotter dice cooled way off at this point too, and our forces nibbled away at each other on every section of the battlefield, getting us to 4-4. After the Cavalry Charge, Mike had the next best chance to win, but a 2 block Austrian LC managed to only lose 1 block to 8 dice over a 2-turn period. The Austrian Lancers finished a weakened French LC to take the lucky win. The Austrians never held a town hex long enough to score a medal via that route. I have to say that after the Cavalry Charge did not end the game or at least cause as significant damage as I expected, Mike's better play earned him a French win. Only those fickle dice saved me and the Austrians in this game.

Mike and I played with just the standard deck, which was fine as we agreed to play that way, but for anyone reading this, I will note that after our game, I reviewed Mark's post announcing this tourney, and saw that the default decks are the 75 card Command deck and the 50 card Tactician deck. So, if you saw that I never referred to any Tactician cards, that is why. We will play the rematch the same way we played the first game, I am sure. Our game 1 was fun and close with both sides having chances to win. What more can you ask for?

After an Austrian advance in the centre (1-1), the battle was decided by the cav clash on the flank. My French were helped by an Infantry first strike, charge if charge, and a double saber leader kill (2-5).

Brad J, French. 2 banners, 23 blocks lost
This game was largely determined by a 2nd turn Austrian cavalry charge, followed by two more right flank cards, resulting in the destruction or depletion of the French cavalry units (2-0). After that, it was a matter of the Austrian preponderance of force being slowly brought to bear for the victory (5-2).

Thanks to Brad for the games – I really had the cards and the dice in these two games.

Game 1: Clash at Pordenone
Patrick, Austrians, 5 banners, 16 blocks lost
John, French, 2 banners, 22 blocks lost
On Turn 4 French used cavalry on the left to weaken Austrian right. Short Supply pushed French artillery in center back to baseline. Austrians advanced in center to take two of three town hexes as well as weaken French cavalry on the left. Eventually with the towns and the lucky dice the Austrians prevailed.

Game 2: Clash at Pordenone
John, Austrians, 4 banners, 16 blocks lost
Patrick, French. 5 banners, 32 blocks lost
This was a really interesting game. The Austrians were constantly pushing forward. First on their right. Then in the center and then on the left. Each time the French pulled out the lucky dice. The Austrians persisted and nearly pulled this off. Damage was signficant but the strategy good.

John is a top player. I just was on the lucky side of the rolls in both games.

Round 1

George & I played our rematch, which I won as the Austrians 5-0.  He had trouble getting left flank cards, and I got a Cavalry Charge card before he did.  My first two turns allowed me to move a GRZ into the uppermost Pordenone hex, and when he used a first strike against my LC on my left, he missed while I got 3 hits on his LN.  His attack on Pordenone got 3 hits on my GRZ, but I retained control of the village hex for 1 banner.  My turn 3 Flank Attack allowed me to eliminate his 1-block LN in the center AND launch a cavalry attack on my right, knowing I had an Attack Right Flank in my hand to follow up.  The cavalry attack did a little damage to us both, but I then drew a Cavalry Charge!  His play of a Counterattack looked like bad news for me, but his ranged fire attack on my 1-block GRZ in Pordenone failed, and his cavalry attack against my right enjoyed only modest success, even though each of his two LC got to attack twice.  My Cavalry Charge in turn 4 allowed me to move my 1-block LC out of danger and gave me a 7d combined arms attack on his 3-block LC – and I rolled 3 yellows. I also eliminated a second French Cav and reduced a third one to 1 block.  His play of Scout Center allowed him to move the 1-block LC and leader to relative safety in the woods, and he drew a Rally and a Cavalry Charge, discarding the latter.  My final play, the Attack Right card, allowed me to surround his 4-block LC and launch a 5d combined arms attack, rolling a yellow, a crossed sword and a flag he could not ignore for 3 hits.  Then my 3-block cav administered the coup-de-grace with another flag he could not ignore.

My cards allowed me to gain the initiative, and the Cavalry Charge draw was an immense stroke of luck.

As I am preparing to post this, I note George’s write-up of our first game.  I completely missed that the default decks were supposed to be the 75-card Command Deck and the Tactician Deck.  I think the previous tournament I was in used the 70-card blue deck, and I just assumed… and we all know what happens then.

I also note that George again started with Counter-Attack and First Strike cards early – great cards in the right situation, but, as he noted, frustrating to start with in a 4-card hand.

Round 1  Game 1
Asterisk1 (Austrians) 3 banners
grecian formula (French) 5 banners

Quirky game involving a lot of tactician card surprises back and forth, outcome in doubt most of the game! Exciting.
French sacrificed an infantry by not squaring up against a cav charge, thereby making sure a critical card was surely available for a winning riposte to end the game

Rounds 1 Game 2
Asterisk1 (French) 5 banners
grecian formula (Austrians) 1 banner

The Austrians sensed a French cavalry charge coming early on, and tried to charge first in a spoiling attack, but it was met firmly. The French did follow up with a Cavalry Charge as anticipated, with a heavy riposte.  Eventually the attacks on that side of the map died down, and the French were ahead 2 units to 1. The Austrians tried to get into position to take the town but the manuevers were clumsy. The French peppered their line with a Fire and Hold card. After that, ust at the right moment, the French unleashed an extremely deadly Bayonet Charge and immediately wiped out 2 more Austrian units and a leader.as well. Game over, quite suddenly!

Good play and game by Camilo and a lot of fun both times!
