The order of the day for the Allies army was patience. They tried to bring up all their troops as orderly as possible, confident in their numerical superiority. Initially, the main action developed on the French right, where Austro-Russian took casualties, especially from the enemy cavalry, but were also able to inflict some losses. A grand maneuver was instrumental in bringing fresh troops for the continuing assault to Telnitz and also forming a grand battery in the central hills. For a few rounds, the Russians managed to take part of Telnitz but then they lost it to French reinforcements coming from the center. However, the French movement toward their right flank left Sokolnitz guarded by a single LT unit. Thus, the Allies were able to move into the village with two units and despite the bravery displayed by the French soldiers, they kept part of it. The final Allied medal came from a Forced March on the French left sector, that eliminated an exposed French LT. I suppose that unit moved there to scare the Allies and force them to abandon their attack elsewhere. But the Allied general was too sleepy to even notice the trap set for him ;-)

Let me thank Tony for his sportsmanship. I made several mistakes during the game that he corrected with patience and courtesy. This is a scenario in which there is quite a number of things to remember. I don't know if it is because I play Napo too little or the others CC games too much... but there is always some rule I don't get right. Annoying.

All of the casualties and almost all of the action took place on the French right. John's Austrian Grenzer Infantrymen did not distinguish themselves and melted away in the face of concentrated French musketfire. I pressed my luck with a reckless Bayonet Charge, which led to some gains, but also led to an overextension of the French formation. John immediately pounced on my mistake, and the Austrian cavalry brought the Allies back in the fight. John executed a coordinated push towards Telnitz, redeploying infantry support from the centre. However, the French cavalry detachment in the rear galloped across the Goldbach in order to shore up the desperate defence of Telnitz. The French cavalrymen showed great courage and skill, and the Allies' fate was sealed by a thunderous combined arms attack. The final action was a flanking maneuver by one of the French cavalry units, which dispatched a weakened Grenzer unit in the Austrian rear.

The Allies never set foot in Telnitz, and the French won 8-3.

Throughout the battle, John was plagued by very, very poor luck - especially with the dice. I had great tactician cards and probably could have gotten even better use of them. Once the combined Austro-Russian push towards Telnitz began, I was really starting to fear for my situation, as John would have been able to cross the stream unopposed and attack the Sokolnitz positions from two sides. So taking that into account as well as the imbalance in luck, the battle was much closer than the scoreline might suggest.

The second battle was much longer and waved back and forth.

The Allies took the initiative early, maneuvering on all three sides in order to camouflage where the blow would fall first. The key move came when the Russian centre was blessed by a Forced March (followed up by a second one some turns later). This allowed the great number of infantry to get closer to the French positions. The Russians massed across from Sokolnitz, seeking to soften up the defenders with musket fire while other units crossed the bridge in order to take the two town hexes. At the same time, Light Infantrymen and Grenadiers struck against the French position in front of Telnitz. Meanwhile, the French used accurate fire to repulse probing attacks on their left, while also inflicting damage on the immobile Austrian Grenzers.

However, the main Russian push in the centre was eventually successful, helped by a lucky LC2 kill on Merle. Soon enough, it was 5-1 to the Allies, who held all of Sokolnitz and began massing towards Sokolnitz Castle.

Undeterred by his horrible luck, John devised a careful plan with which to get back in the fight. Helped by a complete drought of Centre-cards for the Russians, John severely weakened several Allied units on both flanks. The damage could have been even more significant if only Fortuna had not abandoned the French almost entirely. Then came a perfectly timed Give Them The Cold Blood with which the French sought to retake Sokolnitz. Using both capable tacticians and sappers, the French were successful in the bitter hand-to-hand fighting on the blood-soaked streets. The Russians then played a completely blank Rally and the French regained control of half of Sokolnitz.

The Russians managed to retake Sokolnitz and the French centre was entirely shattered. So John attempted a very bold Grande Maneuver, pushing the strong units on his right towards the weakened Austrian Grenzers at the Allied rear. The ploy almost worked, but the luck of the dice was again with the Allied, who used their unused cavalry to counter the French assault. John managed to make it 6-4, but then the Allied played a perfectly timed Cavalry Charge, which claimed the 7th victory banner and placed Allied horsemen in range of 3 separate ways with which to ensure the 8th victory banner (one of the Telnitz hexes, a French 1-block unit in square at the Austrian rear line, and a 1-block Light Infantry at the French left rear). This was a threat too many. The French attempted a glorious counterattack on their left, where their brave units had never lost control of Sokolnitz Castle. However, the poor luck persisted, and they did not even manage some conciliatory banners at the very end.

The Allied army held all of Sokolnitz and half of Telnitz at the end of the bloody battle. 8-4 to the Allies.

This was a thrilling battle. John was again cursed by bad dice luck, and there was a lenthy segment, where we both played a bunch of "Probe [Flank]" cards, while a bunch of units sat idle in the centre around Sokolnitz. I was impressed by John's counter-attack (especially the bold one on the right). Without my cavalry charge at the end, I might have been in serious trouble. So thanks for two fun battles, where the luck of the dice was very one-sided indeed. One of those days.

On my screen, there is a triangle in the Right bottom corner of the text box I can use to expand the text box space

To add a vLog, you need to edit the initial post, you can't add it in the first instance from the Tournament page, you have to be in the Forum page to add attachments. No idea why that is so.

This was a tense battle throughout. Hostilities began on the French right, but the Austrians seemed to have just woken up and had terrible luck, shooting at rocks and shadows on the hills, but missing the French. The French troops pushed the Austrians back, and a suicidal act of valor by Margaron and the French light cavalry, assisted by French Infantry, resulted in the destruction of three Austrian units and Russian Cossacks. The battle then shifted to the French left/Allied right with the Allies moving down towards the Castle and town. Despite assembling a Grand Battery, the Allied forces could not hit much and an attack by the Allied Heavy Cavalry was repulsed. Finally, the Grand Battery annihilated a French Light Unit with 15 dice (!) trying to eliminate one of the artillery units. However, the French sortied on the left, taking out Allied units to end the game. The Allies did not make it into any of the towns and did not cross the river. The battle was on the fence for much of the game and very exciting. Thanks, Joe!

To get the markers back, and get others too, just click on the Terrain button, open up the Markers tab, and then simply drag the appropriate marker onto the board and leave it where you want.

Game 1
Mantra (Allies): 8
Zamba Bone (French): 4

The match kicked off with the allied cav. charging on to the French left. The French to a bit of a licking here as their squares were broken, even losing a leader. Not to be pushed around the French pushed back in the same area a few turns later and ground up the Allies. However, attrition in on the left was too much for them and they slowly defeated. The Allies could have played this one better VP wise. All of the banners were from blocks, not special conditional VPs....could have reduced the French VPs by at least 2 if played on for a few soft turns.

Game 2
Zamba Bones (Allies): 8
Mantra (French): 4

Much like the first battle the Allied hoard came crashing into the French left. The French didn't have any meaningful cards in this section to start, so they took a whipping early on, while slowly top decking the CCs to build up a repulse mid game. The allies pressed on and the French holed up in the towns. The boys in blue were able to push back a little on the left, but the damage was done as the allied center came into play and crossed the river.

The "Hold The Line" card needed to be played. There was no leader stacked with the LT so it would have had to lose another block for the second flag.
Regarding the banners to be removed, you simply hold down the SHIFT key, right click, and then select the delete option. You can do the same for anything, including terrain features.
Cheers

Bangla (Allies) vs Giulio (French) looked like an interesting game.

If I saw it right, I think, Bangla - you played the TC card "Hold the Line Leader" when you didn't need to ? Two flags to ignore, you were supported and Russian LT can ignore 1 flag anyway.

Giulo - how do you manage to remove the banner marker from the board? It is something I've never been able to work out a way to do.

Game 2

Twan van Dijk (soul1st) – French – 8 banners
Mike Stanley (scipio1zama) – Allies – 2 banners

Most of the battle took place on the Telnitz side of the board. The French were able to bring all of their forces on that side accross the stream and above Telnitz.
After that a firefight broke out which weakened some units on both sides. The allies attacked with their cavalry and took out a french LN unit. The french responded with the cavalry and severely weakened an allied cavalry unit and forced some Grenzers into square which they broke with a tactic card.
The allies responded and were able to decimate one of the french LC but not destroy it. The firefight continued. Now also on the other sections of the board.
The allies then tried to take one of the squares in Telnitz, which was abandoned by the French to bring reinforcements forward, with their Cossacks. The French prevented this with their artillery and light infantry. The allies charged with the bayonet at that artillery unit but it responded with cannister at one of the attacking units and some lucky dice rolling at the other which took one Russian LT completely out.
On the next French turns a forced march and a flank attack was executed which resulted in more Austrian casualties on the now severely weakened Allied right.
The pesky Cossacks however did not give up and managed to occupy one of the Telnitz hexes, denying the French the two victory markers with which they started the game. Russian units from the center then charged with the bayonet at the French right and destroyed a LC unit. Other French units were saved with the help of Infantry Combat First and Battle Back Bonus tactic cards. The French survived for the most part the Russian bayonet charge and were able to retake the Telnitz hex with reinforcements from the center.
On the last Allied turn a French Line unit was forced to retreat with a TGB (Tres grande battery, 3 units) from Sokolnitz.

Again a long but enjoyable game.

The Austrians pushed really hard to take the Village of Telnıtz. Even bringing their Artillery to the hills just in front of the town. The french right flank totally collapsed. Then the french tried to attack at the center to stop the Russian advance. But he dice and luck was on the Russian sıde.

The majority of the action took place on the French right section. Allies attacked boldly with the intention of conquering the village and did it. WIth big efforts, the French managed to re-conquer it. At that point, I was pretty much in control of the match but I made the horrendous mistake of moving my cav out of Telnitz, charging a single block squared unit of Russia grenadiers. Honestly, I had 5/12 probability to close the match there, so maybe the mistake was not so horrendous :-) But in any case, I failed and the next turn the Cossacks were back in the village. Since then I had to struggle with very bad cards while the Allies conquered one VP after the other while crawling across the river into the central village. Finally, also thanks to good rolls, I eliminated one of those light infantry commandos for the final VP.

WIth tactician cards, special rules, victory conditions, and national specificities, there are a lot of things to remember and handle in this scenario. Maybe too many for my tastes. I feel this as an undeserved victory. I have the impression that I'm still learning this game. Tony seemed so aware of the overall development and the available opportunities. For sure, I learned from him.

The French under the command of Fery decided that the best defense is a fast attack on the Austrians. All the fighting then continued in front of the T
Telnitz on the hills next to the Satchen Mereş The Russians also tried to help the struggle sending some of their GR LN and LT but the French with the help of the War Gods were able to first defeat the Russian Line Infantry and their Grenadier inf near the hills and finally attacked the Austrian GRZ to win the battle.

Again the game was mostly played around the village of Telnitz, with a lot of action in the land between the village and the lake. In part this is because the 3 strength Russian infantry is so useless at assaulting towns. The French and Austrian cavalry wrote down each other, with one 1 block Light Cavalry left each. The Grenzers did some good shooting, pushing back the French infantry. Eventually the Austrian Horse Artillery forced it's way into Telnitz after a spectacular failure by the Russian Grenadiers, and in truth it was mostly the Austrians that won this match. Really the only useful Russian units were the cossacks (as irritants) and the Russian Heavy Cavalry, which charged across the river, knocked back the French artillery, onto the hill and sabred the artillery completely. Surviving the French riposte, they counted as a banner across the river.

Usual dose of funky VASSAL dice, though mostly just cold, rather than weird.

Game 1
Mike Stanley (scipio1zama) – French – 8 banners
Twan van Dijk (soul1st) – Allies – 6 banners
I’m not going to write my usual long battle description this time, as this was a hard-fought, 4-hour long battle of attrition with a lot of grit and very little finesse. As the French, I played mostly defensively. Even when I crossed the Goldbach Stream on my left near the game’s end, I was trying to protect a couple of weakened units, including a LN w/leader that Twan had forced into square earlier. (In this I was unsuccessful.)
The Allies attacked mostly on the flanks, but it was a long time before ANY unit was removed from the game. The French eventually lost all three LN units AND leader Fery on the right but were able to hold Telnitz. The Allies assembled a Grand Battery in the center that blew away a French LT in Sokolnitz with one roll, but there was another unit standing by to move into the town, and Sokolnitz held throughout the battle, too. Each side lost six banners, so the difference in the game was the 2 Temporary Victory Banners that the French start with. A tense, fun game with a good opponent – what more can one ask for?

Game 2
RiverWanderer (French): 8
Cavie (Allies): 5

Early in the game, the French retired from Sokolnitz to re-inforce both flanks, leaving just garrisons behind. Meanwhile, the Allied cavalry spear-headed an assault on Telnitz, forcing one French line unit into square. Grenzers followed this up to eliminate the square. The French were just about able to repel the attack, weakened Allied cavalry and Grenzers getting away to the rear. However, Keinmayer fell; a bad omen?

As the Allies took advantage of the weak French centre to take Sokolnitz, a French light cavalry unit came up from reserve and penetrated to the Allied centre/left rear. Four weakened Allied units were taken one by one, desperate Allied volleys not withstanding. The loss of Sokolnitz and French infantry units was now offset and banners stood at 4:5 in favour of the French. The French gained a further banner as a Russian Light Infantry unit was lost in an attempt to repel the other French cavalry, before the action around Telnitz came to a pause.

Now the Allies menaced Sokolnitz Castle. Fortunately for the French, the Allied attack there was repulsed with heavy loss, and a seventh banner was gained. Finally, in one desperate last attempt, the Allies used Elan to launch multiple attacks. The heroic French Light Cavalry unit fell to a 6 dice volley from the remaining Grenzers. But the Russian Heavy Cavalry had ended its attack on French artillery weakened and exposed. A French Leadership card finished it off for the final banner.

Thanks to Dan for another enjoyable game.

Log file got corrupted due to Vassal logging failing to mirror the "undo" of one of those accidental "select cards and random blocks" that plagues move actions from time to time, Therefore this is a repaired merge of the two halves.

Game 1
RiverWanderer (Allies): 8
Cavie (French): 2

The game started with a brief Allied volley forcing a French retreat on their right flank; the game switching then to the centre for the next third or so, with the French there soon facing massed Russian artillery and an infantry assault. The French counter-attacked on their right flank, whilst re-inforcing the centre and repulsing the Russian attack.

Much of the action was now on the French right, with the French cavalry making good sport at first, to be seen off by the Allied cavalry and horse artillery. A timely rally kept the pressure up on Telnitz and now an over-extended French Line unit was caught by Austrian Lancers in combined arms with Horse Artillery. Telnitz was now unable to resist the final Allied attack, bringing the game to conclusion.

Thanks to Dan for an enjoyable game.

Game 1

Kandras78 (Allies): 5

After the initial move, the French came out on their right for what turned out to be a protracted struggle that absorbed all efforts for most of the game. Losses were primarily from this flank, with the French infantry under Fery having the best of it, and the French cavalry repulsing the Austrian horse and Cossacks. Ultimately the total loss of the French cavalry, Margaron, the artillery and one Line were the extent of the French losses, all from this flank.

Melle brought the French Light across to reinforce, and effectively dropped the Russian Light infantry that was dangerously close to Telnitz, with the depleted French line in occupation.

With the flank exhausted, and the score 7:5 to the French (so 5 losses each, and the 2 banners for no Allies in villages), the attention turned to the Left flank. As the Allies maneuvered in closer, the French set a surprise, Forced Marched across the stream for an ambush on a Russian Light, which stole the game.
Convinced I had lost this game when Margaron's cavalry suffered a disaster.
