Normally a player is limited to spending one token per player turn.

However, the wording on Leader Duels seems to indicate that:

1) Players may spend more than one token for a leader Duel.

and

2) More than one leader Duel may be fought per player turn.

If true, then this rule overrides the token spending limit for Leader duels.

However, if a Leader Duel(s) are fought, does it preclude players from spending another token on a battle action in the same player turn?

So basically, I am wondering what impact this special rule has on the token spending limit.

Yes, that is the intention. Inspired Action tokens can be spent in excess of the normal allowance on Personal combat challenges.

Hi Mark.

Thank you for the reply but i think you may have missed my last question.

That being:

If a Leader Duel(s) are fought, does it preclude players from spending another token on a battle action in the same player turn? So, can players spend tokens on duels and a battle action in the same player turn?

Also, I forgot to ask this question.

Do Personal combats take the place of declared close assault combats?

or

Or do the players resolve close combat after the Personal combat?

Thank you,

John

Personal challenges are intended to work in a similar manner to the way they do in Samurai Battles. I clearly need to re-work the language of the Special Rule to reflect that.

In answer to your specific questions

1. The usual limits of 1 Inspired Action token can be spent per turn on Battlefield actions. In addition, an unlimited number of Inspired Action tokens can be spent to enhance Personal challenges.

2. Personal challenge happens before the particular units battle, but does not replace that battling. The sequence of play is thus;
Personal challenge (simultaneous)
Attacker battle (unless pre-empted by First strike or Ambush)
Defender battleback

Hi Mark.

Thank you for the reply.

Your answers confirm what I suspected to be true.

I watched this being played on Patrick's Tactics and they skipped close combat after the Leader combats. At one point, Patrick's opponent, Peter basically said Leader combat was in lieu of close combat. I do not know why he assumed that.

I probably will play these scenarios with my regular opponent, so it is good to get the clarifications.

I try to keep Special Rules short, but optional add on rules my opponent liked are;
1. Leader can refuse a Personal challenge by expending 1 Inspired Action token
2. Hidden bidding of IA tokens in the challenges (i.e. taking tokens into your fist and revealing simultaneously). Doesn't really work with VASSAL.
