Historical Background
After the disastrous and costly retreat from Cyzicus Mithridates wintered near Cabira where he assembled a force of 40,000 foot soldiers and 4000 cavalry. In the spring Lucullus marched over the mountains to Cabira. Mithridates relying on the strength of his cavalry crossed the river Lycus and offered battle.
In the following cavalry battle the Romans where defeated and Lucullus’s master of horse Pomponius was captured.
When asked what favour he would grant the king for sparing his life he reply “A great one if you make peace with Lucullus, but if you continue his enemy I will not even consider your question." Lucullus avoided the plain as the enemy was superior in horse but chanced that certain Greeks, who had taken refuge in a cave, were captured, and the elder of them, Artemidorus, promised to serve Lucullus as a guide, and set him in a place which was safe for his camp, and which had a fortress overlooking Cabira. This resulted in the battle of Cabira where once again Lucullus destroyed Mithridates army.
