Seems that the Spartan blocks give their side a good amount of advantage.

I have to agree. 2 solitaire games with the Spartans having the edge in blocks, resulted in two Spartan wins. ,5 - 1. 5 - 4. The second game was closer due to some wipeout rolls for the Argives.

This is an odd scenario. We played it four times this evening, and recorded four Spartan victories (5-3, 5-3, 5-2, 5-1). In all four games, the Spartans won the battle of the champions (blocks to add: 6-2, 6-2, 4-2, 4-1) and they had better cards in the game. Spartan hoplites with six blocks are formidable indeed!
