Both matches were very even and could have gone to either side. The action was almost solely in the center section. Both sides got decimated in multiple attacks. After that the side most succesful in mopping up won.

Round 5 Game 2

The battle started fast with a Macedonian DT into the Spartan, where the Spartan's held firm and eliminated a Heavy and wounded a medium, and then the Spartan's counter attacked and eliminated the medium for an early lead.  The battle raged on with the Spartan's holding a lead but the Macedonians fought hard and smartly but in the end Antipeter went down with his Heavy Infantry and the battle ended with Sparta the victor.

Initial skirmishing on the right saw the Macs surround and eliminate the Sparty LC in the hills. A Mac Double Time and a Sparty Order Mounted that got the Hoplites moving saw more damage, followed by the Mac using Spartacus to kill an Aux, and the Spartans exchanging a MC to kill the Warrior.
Fighting switched to the center, where a Mac attack with damaged infantry units took out both Spartan (5-block) hoplites AND the leader, giving Macedonia a 6-1 lead until they lost a HI unit. There followed several turns of maneuvering as the Mac MC tried unsuccessfully to chase down a 2-block LS for the win. The seven remaining Spartan units turtled up, followed up by a great deal more maneuvering before the Mac inexorably closed in, the game ending with an exchange of Auxilia units.

Most of the early and midgame fighting took place on the right side of the map in and around the hills, where the Spartans started off aggressively and got the worst of it, losing an Aux, MC and LS in exchange for the Macedonian Warrior. But the balance of the fighting took place in the center, and the 5 Spartan Hoplites really earned their pay, aided by a Counterattack to a Macedonian-played Mounted Charge, followed in short order by a Spartan Mounted Charge. These allowed the Hoplites to close into battle and the extra dice gave them the better of the exchange, racking up a Macedonian HI, two Aux and two MI while the Spartans lost just 2 hoplites. The Macedonians had a chance to win at the end, but the dice did not cooperate and a final attack by a Spartan hoplite saw a roll of 2 reds and 2 swords eliminate a 3-block HI for the winning banner.

The battle began with both sides maneuvering LIT units to take the left side hills, which were eventually taken by the Mac MCAVs. Action moved to the center, but the Macs were separated, while the Sparts kept their MIs and MHs together and pushed against the Mac right side. Although the Mac MCAVs took two banners on and around the left side hills, the Sparts pushed forward to the center/right, crushing that side of the Mac line and finishing the battle 7-2.

This battle also began with both sides maneuvering LIT units to take the left side hills, but this time the Spartans sent a leader who supported a quick and decisive takeover. Action moved to the center, with the Sparts advancing while the Macs drew back. The Sparts sent addition support to the left, which proved to be decisive later. The Macs responded with a push on the left, but their MI proved useless, and was quickly dispatched when the Sparts crushed the Mac left, taking 3 banners in one turn. The Sparts then took the hills on the right, taking banners along the way. Although the Macs ultimately destroyed both Spartans special units, the Sparts used archery and maneuvering to destroy or chase off enough units to take the field. Two games that went the same way.  The Macedonians were always ahead but the hills on the Spartan left allowed them to hold long enough for the Spartan Hoplites to do just enough to win.
Two excellent games, played in a good spirit.
