Match 2

Player Brent (Brit): 4 Banners

Player Gileforn (Rome): 6 Banners

That was a fantasti game with Brent. I've lost the first game so was need to reach the better or same result. This scenario is very cool. Hills are changing everything, every movement is very important. Luck was on the both sides but after darken the sky when Brits had a chance to finish a game, and after that with line command auxilaria destroyed warriors. Good both games.

Thanks to Brent!

Round 4 Cefn Carnedd - Match 1

BrentS (Rome) 6 - Gileforn (Britons) 4

These were two tight, evenly matched games. A very enjoyable, brain burning grind of a scenario. Not one I’d want to play frequently but a good, unique challenge for occasional play. The steep hill SSR takes some concentration to track and is the defining feature of the scenario. This match rolled from the Roman left to right across the battlefield, dictated by the Roman hand. The battle for the left hills ground into bloody deadlock until there were no units of any consequence left there. The action then moved to the centre where the Romans advanced into the river, bore a withering Darken the Sky from the Britons, then Double Timed for a 3 banner play, including a leader kill (lucky but that balanced itself out in the second match). The game then drew out into a cagey hunt for 1 block units until the tigger was pulled on the right and Rome took the final banner. Two fun and very closely contested matches, each of which could have gone either way. Good scenario and very strong play by Andrey. Thanks for some great matches.

Brent.

Match 1
RiverWanderer (Britons): 6 Banners
gottoman (Romans): 3 Banners

Romans made early advances across the field, threatening to push exposed Briton units from the hills. Britons sallied out from the ramparts and hills to attack where the Roman attack was weakest in the centre. After some even exchanges, despite a failed "First Strike", the Romans were starting to get the better of this attack, when the Britons played Clash Of Shields and took 3 banners in one turn. Undeterred, the Romans pressed on and gained a third banner from what remained of a Warrior unit defending a rampant. Finally, on the second attempt, the Britons took the win, with a desperate moving ranged attack on single block Auixlia that was about to escape. Perhaps just in time for the Britons, as by now, the Roman position was looking the stronger of the two.

Thanks to Greg for an exciting game. Match 2 is scheduled for Sunday.

Match 2
gottoman (Britons): 2 Banners
RiverWanderer  (Romans): 6 Banners

A brief ranged skirmish was soon followed by a warrior attack against the Roman left, the Romans responding with a line advance that developed into close combat across much of the line of the stream. Sheer weight of numbers told against the Britons, made worse by an unlucky Rally and an early leader loss. A Clash of Shields might have made all the difference, but it was not to be and the battle of attrition went to the Romans.

Mark McG vs Rand

Round 4 Game 1
Mark McG – Britons – 6 Banners
Rand – Rome – 4 Banners
After ranged attacks on both flanks, Rome advances quickly on the right flank into the Barbarian lines. An early rally by the Britons fails to mobilize more men to the front lines and Roman medium infantry moves up to close with the light units on the right flank. Caratacus leads his warriors and smashes into a group of medium infantry but fails to push the Romans back across the Severn River. A double march allows the Romans to gain the ramparts and push back most of the Britons. Heavy fighting pays out in the Roman right flank in the mountains and the lone remaining rampart, though Scapula is cut down in a mountain pass by warriors. A clash of shields destroys most of the Britons’ left flank and the Briton leader flees off the battlefield to safety. With banners at 4 to 4, the Briton right flank surges forward on an unprepared Rome, catching two light units flatfooted in the riverbed, pushing both back to the edge of the battlefield. Rome attempts to stabilize its lines, but the Britons chase down and smash apart the shaken light units, winning the battle.

Round 4 Game 2
Mark McG – Rome – 3
Rand – Britons – 6
A line command allows the entire Roman army to advance, peppering the Britons with ranged fire. Withering the storm, the Britons hold, but the Roman right flank is quickly on them. Fighting breaks out and the Britons overwhelm the Romans, killing or pushing back all who have crossed the river. A second Roman surge over the river is again broken up and the Britons lead 5 – 2. Sporadic fighting goes on, with pushes and retreats up and down the battlefield, both sides trying to gain the upper hand. The Britons warriors take the brunt of the further fighting, continuously holding back the Romans, though poor cards and improbable dice luck hampers the Romans as well. A Roman unit is cut off and after almost fighting its way free from the trap, is destroyed, giving the Britons the victory.

One of the more interesting terrain minded scenarios, lots of fun to play and tactically challenging. Thank to Mark McG for two great games, and his help with a couple of the rules. Good luck to him in the rest of the tournament.

Round 4 Game 1
EZPickins (Britons) 6 banners
scipio1zama (Roman) 1 banner

The Romans opened with a Line Command into the river. Several turns of fire were exchanged before they advanced further. When  they did advance on the left they faced stiff resistance and lost three Auxilia. Fighting on this flank went on for time costing each a unit. They then assaulted the ramparts on the left where they got blasted by good rolls resulting in their defeat.

Game 2
EZPickins (Romans) 3 banners
scipio1zama (Britons) 6 banners

This time the Romans were slow to advance and were content to exchange fire when possible. Two units crossed the river on the right to cause some disruption to the Britons but cost a Light  and Auxilia. Finally the Romans decided to cross and engage in close combat; Unfortunately this didn't go well although some losses were infliced.
With the Romans down in banners and Scapula dead the Britons charged on the left for the win.

Two good games versus a fine player.
