The Carthaginians quickle controlled their right flank using aggressively the Sacred Band, but the river was costly to pass with the Syracusans skirmishing on the other side. On the center the Syracusans slowly advanced and pushed the light Carthaginian troops to the very edge of the battlefield. The destruction of the Syracusan left meant the score was 7 to 2 for Carthage for many turns, but then Carthage was unable to find enemies to fight against or to cross the river, even a lone Greek leader evaded the battlefield unscathed. They started to move their chariots to the center using mounted marches and by the time there was the final engagement to score had risen to 9-7.
