Ending of game seems like a chase

I've played C&C Ancients a few times. Perhaps we're not following the rules, but every game I've played, towards the end of the game, it becomes a race between who can kill off the enemies weakest units first to claim the win. With each persons weakest units / depleted units being chased around the board. At this point there doesn't seem much strategy or tactics.

Just wondering if anyone has experienced the same thing? Or if anyone has any comments on this?

yes, that happens, and can be mitigated somewhat by having weak units shielded by strong ones. But a race to the final banner total is the essence of the game Victory Conditions.

Thematically it reflects pushing the army to the breaking point, when the army routs
and historically after the battle, the victors chase the losers as they race to safety

What do you hope for?

I guess I think it feels odd – tactics, strategy all go out the window and it feels too much like a chase, between strong units and weak units. Using your turns to try and move weak units away - while most of your army stands around not doing much.
