This German 5.0 cm (L/60) towed anti-tank gun succeeded the 3.7 cm Pak 36. First operational in April 1941, it was one of the few German early guns capable of penetrating the Soviet T-34's hull armor (albeit at close range). Though the Wehrmacht eventually fielded more powerful weapons, this type remained in useful service until the end of the war. The gun fired anti-personnel and anti-tank rounds; the latter category included Panzergranate 40 Armour-piercing composite rigid (APCR) shots with a hard tungsten carbide core, in an attempt to penetrate the thick armor of the KV-1 tank. The nearly 10,000 units Rheinmetall-Borsig produced saw service in all theaters. A crew of five operated the weapon. The Sd.Kfz. 234/2 heavy armoured car and later models of Pz. III tanks carried the tank gun variant of this design (5 cm KwK 39 gun (L/60)).
