This German casemate-type heavy tank destroyer was built on a slightly lengthened Pz. VI Tiger II chassis. This 71-tonne armored fighting vehicle was the heaviest operational vehicle of any type from any nation in the war. It was armed with a 128 mm PaK 44 L/55 main gun which was capable of defeating any vehicle fielded by the Allied forces. Its heavy, sloped armor made it extremely resistant to Allied fire. It could attain a top speed of 21 mph. Contrasting with its impressive offensive and defensive capabilities, the Jagdtiger (“hunting tiger”) had major shortcomings. Its extreme weight resulted in a significantly underpowered drivetrain system, plaguing the type with various mobility and mechanical problems. It saw brief service in small numbers (~70 to ~88 units) from late 1944 on both the Western and Eastern fronts.
