This tank destroyer featured a 7.5 cm Pak 39 L/48 gun in fixed mounting in a sloped casemate-style superstructure on the chassis of a Czech-made Panzer 38(t) tank. It was also armed with a remote-controlled 7.92 mm MG 34 machine gun. It was intended to be more cost-effective than the much more ambitious Jagdpanther and Jagdtiger designs. Using a proven chassis, it avoided the mechanical problems of the larger armoured vehicles. It had a top speed of 26 mph. The Böhmisch-Mährische Maschinenfabrik and Škoda companies built more than 2,800 Jagdpanzer (“hunting tank”) 38(t) units between March 1944 and May 1945, making this a common German tank destroyer during the final year of the war. The type saw service on the Eastern and Western fronts. The Germans and Hungarians received manufactured examples, and the Soviets, Bulgarians, and Czech partizans used captured examples.
