This British tank was renowned for its heavy armor, ability to climb steep slopes, and adapability to many uses. Rushed into production when German invasion of the British Isles seemed imminent, it evolved through early mechanical problems to become an effective tank in service in North Africa, Italy, Western Europe, and also on the Eastern Front with Soviet forces. Its thick frontal and turret armor proved extremely effective against Axis anti-tank and tank guns, particularly early in the war. The type first saw service in August 1942, during the Dieppe Raid, and served until 1951. Throughout the war, the type was up-gunned and received other improvements. This 'Churchill Mk I' unit represents both the Mk I and II, which carried the Quick-Firing (QF) 2-pounder (40 mm, L/50) main gun. This gun did not have anti-personnel rounds available. All variants also had one 7.92 mm Besa machine gun in the turret and one forward-facing in the hull, required a crew of five, and had a top speed of 15 mph. Vauxhall Motors produced 1,427 of these two variants.
