Hino Motors introduced this half-tracked armored personnel carrier in 1944. Powered by a diesel engine, it carried a crew of two, plus up to 13 passengers and main armament of three 7.7 mm Type 97 light machine guns. Its operational range was 190 miles, and maximum speed 31 mph. The Type 1 Ho-Ha's design was based on the German Sd.Kfz. 251/1, without the use of the latter's overlapped and interleaved road wheels, and with a rearward-opening access door that integrated elements from both the Sd.Kfz. 251/1 and American M3 Half-track. Imperial Japan first deployed this vehicle to China, and later to bolster defensive forces in The Philippines. Hino Motors produced relatively few units in 1944 and 1945.
