Inspired by German StuG IIIs, this 31-tonne Soviet self-propelled howitzer (or assault gun) featured a short-barreled 122 mm L/22.7 M-30S howitzer in a casemate at the forward end of a T-34 chassis. It proved effective in its intended role of direct fire on strongholds for infantry support. The massive concussion of the 122 mm high explosive round could also be enough to blow the turret off a Tiger I with a direct hit. However, like most howitzers, the accuracy of the M-30 was less than that of contemporary weapons designed for the anti-tank role. Soviet manufacturers produced 1,150 units between late 1942 and mid-1944. It carried a crew of five at a top speed of 34 mph. These stats reflect the standard ToI unit.
