Round 4

Player 1 (German) Gonzo 6 medals 15 figs lost
Player 2 (French) toganalper 3 medals 21 figs lost

Game opened with MG barrage from Germans. French inf never really recovered from that. Traded medals until Germans nailed down a bogged tank for final 2 medals.
Thanks to Samim for fun game and teaching me the ropes.

I am just editing the comments of gonzo, unfortunately I did not save the logfile since I have lost the game. I hope he will attach it later.

Cheers

Round 3

Player 1 (German) gotigerssc 6 medals 18 figs lost
Player 2 (French) EZPickins 3 medals 22 figs lost

I lost track of how many times my combat cards bailed me out in this one. French made a strong push on my right and at one point had three units in my trench. Most of the fighting was in that section. At the end of the match we each only had 1 unit left in the section - mine being a 1 figure heavy MG and his being a mortar with spotter - with none in the trench. On my final turn I played a box barrage that was promptly answered by a shell shortage. As luck would have it, my roll was on target followed by two deadly die that took out his last 1 figure infantry unit in the trench. Two of my medals came from racing against time.

#54 Nivelle Offensive - La Folie Farm

Mark Germans 4 Medals - 13 Fig. Lost
Mirko French 5 Medals - 17 Fig Lost

A game where the French were always behind the Germans until the very last round. The French Reserve Artillery will remain forever the Undisputed Queen of this match, hitting accurately and deadly at the same time not once but twice. Thanks to Mark for the fun.

RND01
The French open with a Forward leaving the center units untouched.
On the right the infantry seeks shelter in the woods and on the left one Loader Machine Gun is repositioned and one infantry unit moves over the top.
The Germans respond with a Mata Hari depriving the French of a Direct from HQ and a Storm of Fire.
They open fire on the infantry in the fields almost wiping them out.

RND02
French plays an Assault Left. Moving forward more units and firing with 2 machine guns. Some German units in the trenches get wounded and 1 Personnel with a LMG unit gets killed.
The Germans respond by playing a Right Assault and kill the Infantry in the open and wounding the officer unit forcing them to retreat in the woods
1-0 for the Germans.

RND03
French play Outflanked. On the right 2 more units join the one already in the woods. On the left the Heavy Loader MG forces the Light Machine gun in the trenches to retreat and the advancing Officer unit approaching the trenches has the time to finish them off.
The Germans respond with a Big Show ordering 3 units that are able to kill one French unit in the woods in the Germans’ left flank and also the officer unit left in the open on the right flank. A bloodied turn for the French.
3-1 for the Germans

RND04
The French unleash again an Infantry Assault on the right.
Two infantry attack the unit that had just eliminated one of the French units and with a lucky roll with their first attack they get rid of the enemies.
The Germans with an Attack Left lead the first strike of Reserve Artillery, luckily in vain and then moves away the Artillery Piece from the advancing French.
3-2 for the Germans.

RND5
The French respond firing their Reserve artillery ordered by a Recon Centre card. Positioning their target on the Center Artillery Field. Luck strikes and two Hits on Target (with 3 dices) wound the Artillery.
Germans win a Medal by playing a Counter-Attack and by shelling with the Field Artillery force the infantry unit on the right to retire behind the woods.
4-2 for the Germans.

RND6
A Recon in Force played by the French allows the Officer on the right to advance and conquer the hill adjacent to the first piece of artillery. They have no option to attack the enemy and have to wait. On the right the Light Machine Gun advances in the woods and in the Centre again is the Reserve Artillery that is in Full Effect again. Shelling (with 3 dice) the same Field Artillery that was targeted before they hit with 2 ones and 1 6. The result is incredible and sheer luck and fate is the only possible explanation. The On Target roll hits once and forces also the piece of field artillery to retreat where another shrapnel will fall. After retreating the Field Artillery is HIT AGAIN!! And destroyed.
The Germans play a Direct from HQ hitting on the right the advancing unit and on the left German side the Artillery Piece open fire hitting 3 times the advancing officer, not eliminating therefore the unit and not eliminating the officer either.
4-3 For the Germans.

RND7
The French win the game by playing and Outflanked card and moving the Officer Unit on the Field Artillery pieces winning the last 2 Medals needed to win the Scenario.

So I am going to quite arbitarily rule that French tanks are worth 2 medals when eliminated. The scenarios seem to skip over this detail, but I suspect it is just an omission.

Given that the Germans have won all Round 3 & 4 matches to date, this makes no difference I think.

In our battle we played as tanks, being 2 medals worth, unfortunately I also learned it the hard way :))

Yes, I am alive and well. Scheduled for first game on Monday. I noted in the rulebook that there isa farm building under the starting German MG position that does not appear in the module in VASSAL nor on the published scenario on the website. This should probably be corrected. www.dropbox.com/s/imomqngt1w53p4k/Screen....44.43%20AM.png?dl=0

so I was kind of wondering how these errors happen, and then I saw the tiny map in the scenario book..

could be anything under there, but almost certainly not a trench. A building makes most sense, and the VASSAL scenario setup should be updated.
However, given that 2 games are already played, I'm inclined to leave the setup as is for the rest of the tournament, though in truth I think the difference isn't major anyway. Happy to hear other opinions on this.

Round 2 - Nivelle Offensive (La Folie Farm) - 4 April 1917

Player 1 (German) gotigerssc 5 medals, 17 figures lost
Player 2 (French) Clexton27 4 medals, 16 figures lost

One of the faster battles I have played for TGW. French had all the right cards and made a strong push on their left that swamped me in that section. They were also aided by a Short Supply that sent my heavy MG to the baseline. All of my trench units were eliminated and the French held the farm. They would have won on the next turn because of it, but the Germans just barely squeezed by with Artillery Bombard (on target) to take out a 1 figure infantry unit on open ground for the win. One German medal came from a recon card. Best of luck to Jim the rest of the way!

Round 1 - Nivelle Offensive (St. Quentin) - 1-4 April 1917

Player 1 (French) Clexton27 - 6 medals, 15 figures lost
Player 2 (German) Gonzo - 4 medals, 14 figures lost

A somewhat one-sided affair as the French had great cards (2-Infantry Assaults, 2 Forwards, Counterattack, 2 Direct from HQ). The opening move was a blitz up the left flank towards Grugiers. The Germans countered by unleashing their Reserve Artillery to cause damage and their special forces Marksman also garnered a lot of early hits. In the end, both the village of Grugiers and Urvillers fell to the French as Germans retreated to avoid giving up units. Toward the end the French made another blitz toward the hills and were able to capture them as well. The Germans had one chance to kill or displace the French on their final turn, but alas, it was a flag fest and French units retreated unharmed. Allies win by capturing two villages, one hill and killing off three infantry. The Germans were able to use two recons for medals and kill two advancing infantry (both special personnel). A fun game and fast as the assault was continuous. Thanks Joe for being a good sport.
