Dave, Allies:5
Stephen, French15.
Phase 1. Allied advance on their right with cavalry and light infantry. Furious fighting on this flank follow: French cav attack, Allies reply with cav charge and then French counter-attack. French up 0-4 but keep attacking, and a 1-5 lead becomes 5-5, with the French cav on the left destroyed and the infantry sheltering in the villages from the victorious Allied cav. The French GLC and LC gallop across the battlefield from the centre to the left to shore up the defeated French left. Vasilchikov charges the French LC, nearly destroying it – but the French GLC surround and destroy him: 5-7.
Phase 2. Meanwhile, Russian art in the centre has been gradually weakening the French centre art. A forced march brings the Russian infantry in the centre closer to La Rothiere and LGM brings the Austrians close to Dienville – but the Austrian attack on the Allied left is repulsed by the French conscripts with excellent dice rolls: 5-7.
Phase 3. The French, weak in the centre and right, launch a desperate counter-attack on their left with the two GLC supported by the YG and LtI. The Russian right collapses: 5-14. The French force march from Dienville and destroy the Grenzers: 5-15.
It was a much closer game than the score shows, and could have gone either way. The Allies were handicapped by very bad dice in Phase 3. A pleasure as always to play against Dave, who fought well!
