This tracked vehicle was intended to give front-line anti-tank infantry units the ability to move their guns quickly whilst in combat. It placed the 7.5 cm PaK 40/1 (L/46) anti-tank gun on top of the fully tracked, lightweight Raupenschlepper Ost (“Crawler tractor east”) (RSO) utility vehicle chassis. Though it was more exposed compared to the conventional, open-topped Panzerjäger, it provided a lightweight, inexpensive, and highly mobile infantry anti-tank weapon. In spite of their relatively low top speed (19 mph) and light armour, operators found them useful. The Steyr company produced only 60 units--all in 1943--all of which served on the Eastern front.
