This Landing Vehicle, Tracked (LVT) was one among a family of amphibious warfare and landing craft vehicles. Originally intended solely as cargo carriers for ship-to-shore operations, they evolved into assault troop and fire support vehicles. The types were known as 'amphtrack,' 'amtrak,' and 'amtrac,' (portmanteaus of 'amphibious tractor'), and also 'alligator' or 'gator.” The LVT-3 Bushmaster variant featured a ramp installed in the rear for loading/unloading, and had room for a Jeep, 9,000 lbs of payload, or 30 fully armed soldiers. Its armament consisted of two pintle-mounted .50 (12.7 mm) Browning M2HB machine guns and two pintle-mounted .30-06 (7.62) Browning M1919A4 machine guns. The type had a maximum ground speed of 20 mph. Multiple American manufacturers built 2,962 units during World War II, and they saw service in the Pacific theater beginning in mid-1943.
