Match 1
Polonus100 (Vitellian)  5 banners won
RJorge (Othonian)  1 banner won
Decisive victory held by Vitellian forces. Continuous push on the stronger Left Wing destroyed opposite forces and repelled counterattack by Othonian Warriors.

Match 2
RJorge (Vitellian)  4 banners won
Polonus100 (Othonian)  5 banners won
This time battle was more balanced. First, Othonians managed to withdraw its endangered Right Wing towards Center and attacked by Double Time advancing and exposed for flanking Vitelian's Center with lucky result. Leader of Vitellian Center fell in battle (3-0). In desperation Vitellians used "I Am Spartacus" in very good result both in choosing units and in combat. It was 3-4 for Vitellians. Cavalry Charge by Otho gave banner for 4-4 but exposed charging cavalry to counterattack with flanking and cutting off path of retreat. Unlucky roll for Vitellians gave possibility for opponent to destroy flanking L unit with Vitellius, but he had no cards for strong response. L unit with Vitellius (1 block) managed to survive and Vitellian H unit without Leader support again attacked Othonian force cutting off Vitellius' path of retreat. Without success and Otho made "coup de grâce ".

Game 1
TTC (Vitellian) 2 banners
PCScipio42 (Othonian) 5 banners

Otho jumped to a quick 2-0 lead as Treb left an aux unit with no retreat path in range of the cav unit and support. But was score was tied as the weakened units from that that combat were killed off. Otho used a line command and a double time to get in contact and with some hot dice secured the next 3 banners.

Game 2
PCScipio42 (Vitellian) 5 banners
TTC (Othonian) 4 banners

Otho again went up 2-0 and then score was tied up. The Guard paid dividends for Otho and went up 4-2 with killing a Vitellian leader. Score was tied 4-4 and Otho had a couple of rolls to win but did not get them. A timely Clash of Shields card saved the day for Vitellius.

Good, quick scenario, enjoyed it. First time for Treb playing this system, he picked it up quick.

Match 2

Riverwanderer (Vitellian) # banners won 5

Milla (Othonian) # banners won 1

The Othonian right led a general advance towards the Vitellian lines that continued through the game.

The Vitellians were able to take advantage of the resulting positions to gain 3 early banners from the weaker Othonian right flank, with another coming soon after from a melee attack on the opposite flank. The final clash came in the centre, where the Othonians attacked in force to gain a banner but at the cost of a weakened heavy unit that fell to the next Vitellian turn.

A fast paced game, as medium and heavy units were soon engaged in melee combats with leaders in support.

taliapharaoh - Vitellian - 2
Marco - Othonian - 5

Note: For clarity, I use “Left” and “Right” to refer to the left and right side of the map, not to each players left or right flank.

Summary: Vitellian was the aggressor on the right and center and took more blocks, but Othonian managed to run his heavily damaged units out of danger and take enough banners for the victory.

The battle began with both sides maneuvering Lights, Othonian for missile fire, and Vitellian mostly advancing on the right but also bringing up units on the left. Vitellian continued on the right with a DoubleTime, eliminating a LB, doing heavy damage to an MI, and leaving Othonian with no right flank. Othonian pushed back in the center, eliminating an HI but sustaining heavy damage to another MI. Vitellian continued his center attack, but failed to take any banners. Othonian pushed back, destroying Vitellian’s HI but failing to take out Vitellian himself, despite two LDR checks. Now neither side had any strength on the right.

Vitellian then brought up his HI to the center, gaining more blocks but again no banners. Othonian answered by bringing up his own center HI, finishing off a Aux but failing a single die LDR check on Vitellian. Vitellian continued to bring his units to the center, while Othonian concentrated on saving his many heavily damaged units. More action on the center/left cost Othonian an MI but chased off the MC. Vitellian now turned to the center for an all-in attack on the Praetorians, but they held and destroyed the HI on a BB and also their LDR for the 5-2 win.

Marco - Vitellian - 5
taliapharaoh - Othonian - 2

Summary: Othonian maneuvered his left and right flanks into good position, advanced his line, but again failed to secure banners. Vitellian took damage and looked exposed, but a lucky Rally followed by a DoubleTime secured the victory.

The battle began with Othonian wisely burning a MountedCommand to maneuver his MC and LDR Titianus. As in the first game, Vitellian brought up his LI on the left and right. Othonian maneuvered on the left and center, bringing his HI and WARS forward. Vitellian answered with pressure on the right, seeking to take advantage of the LDRless units there. Crafty Othonian refused the right, bring his MI to the center and the embrace of LDR Titianus there. Vitellian brought units to the center, creating an unbroken line across the battlefield. Both players used LineCommands, taking blocks but no banners. Othonian Counterattacked the LineCommand, eliminating an AUX but taking damage to an HI and an MI. Vitellian CounterAttacked the CounterAttack LineCommand (you have to be a CCA junkie to understand that) destroying an MI. Othonian attacked in the center, doing damage but failing to secure a banner and losing an HI.

Vitellian sacrificed to the Gods and they answered. Rallying four blocks to his damaged MI and HI, he then eliminated two MI in the center. Othonian answered on the left, finishing off a heavily damaged Aux. but Vitellian DoubleTimed in the center, cutting off the LB and finishing them with HI.

Match 1

Milla (Vitellian) 5 banners
RiverWanderer (Othonian) 4 banners

Both sides started with some ineffective ranged fire.  The Othonian warriors then charged into battle, which resulted in them being routed.

The Vitellian centre pushed forward, destroying one Othonion unit and pushing several others back. A counter attack led by the Praetorian Guard saw them taking heavy losses and resulted in one Vitellian heavy infantry and one Othonian medium infantry being defeated. Further skirmishing in the centre led to the destruction of the Praetorian Guard.

Advances on the Othonian left flank wiped out the Vitellian cavalry and auxilia.  Both sides were now level on 4 victories.

The two heavy infantry on the Vitellian left flank now advanced into battle. Skirmishes between them and the Othonion medium infantry ended with a loss of one of the Othonians and victory to the Vitellians.

OT24 Round 1  409 Bedriacum

Game 1

Brent S (Othonian) 5
SteveT (Vitellian ) 0

Well, there was some dice hijinx causing this result. The Othonianas Julianed straight up the centre and the Vitellians responded to form a formidable line. Titanius had to withdraw but left the depleted Praetorian, down to 2 blocks, stranded in the centre. The Vitellians advanced a medium and heavy with leader against it…….it First Struck and then survived to battle back, killing them both with 4 hit rolls…then ran away and survived. Good Praetorians! Then the Othonian line advanced and scored 3 reds on the 3 ranged dice to kill a Viteliian Heavy and its leader on a leader check (I felt dirty). Finally pinned a bowman on the Vitellian right to end it. Ugly and nothing Steve could do about that result.

Game 2

SteveT (Othonian) 5
Vitellian (Vitellian) 4

Much closer now that I couldn’t rig the dice. Vitellius Julianed in from his left flank to prevent attrition from the Othonian bowman then Spartacused to cut off that bowman’s evasion path and kill it. Titanius Double Timed in response but failed to eliminate Vitellius and suffered on battle back. Vitellius killed two more units and was 3-0 up but both his heavies were down to 1 block and both were eliminated. 3-2 and both lines Julianed together in the centre, which Otho got the better of. 4-4 and the Othonian cavalry made a desperate charge against the Vitellian cavalry and failed but survived the battle back and leader led counter (so close). Vitellius twice tried to kill Titanius’ 1 block Medium leading a Light Infantry in close combat (needs must) but failed and died on battle back.

Small margins and a much more engaging battle than the first. Thanks for some strongly played and enjoyable battles, Steve.

Brent.

Match 1
Tuscan Centurion (Simon) (Vitellian) 4 banners
Warwick (Othonian) 5 banners

Some skirmishing at start taking the odd block here and there. Then Vitellius advanced in the centre and took out the Othonian centre to be up 3-0.
Othonians then hit back on their right to make it 3-2 with some depleted units for both sides. A few moves later it was 4-3 as both sides moved around waiting for the right cards to deliver the final blow.
Came down to a sole 2 block Othonian Medium Infantry taking out 2 depleted Heavy Inf to win the game in 12 turns.

Match 2
Warrick (Vitellian) 3 banners
Tuscan Centurion (Simon) (Othonian) 5 banners

Similar start with skirmishing taking the odd block out. Both sides then managed to set up solid long lines in the middle of the board 2 hexes apart.
Vitellian got a Double time first and used it to good effect to smash the Othonian right and go 2-0. Ranged fire had units down to 2 blocks before the rest of the melees started but a lucky Rally by the Othonians got 2 of their units (1 Hvy & 1 Lgt) back to full strength.
An overzealous Othonian cavalry charge on the on the Vitellian right got them another banner (3-1) and the Othonian with a few 1 block units left on their right. (3-2)

Praetorians then hit Vitellius and his depleted heavies to clear the threat on the right while Titianus and the gladiators hit the Vitellian centre. (4-3).

In desperation the Vitellian cavalry used a mounted charge to try to slow down Titianus but were slaughtered to give the game to Otho (5-3)

MATCH 1

    scrum4you Player 1 (Vitellian)  5
    Kartigan  Player 2 (Othonian)   4

Othonian pushed the pace early with lights and ranged attack. Vitellian responded by advancing left flank and the players exchanged mostly ranged attacks somewhat effectively.  Both players formed their lines and engaged in melee on the left.  Vitellian got three banners in one turn with two 4-block attacks (lucky! 1/6 chance each!) together with taking out a weakened cavalry. Othonian played Double Time to bring the center of lines together, punched a hole in the Vitellian line and claimed his first banner. Vitellian counter-attacked with his left center and weakened Othonian units. Othonian counter-counter-attacked and claimed his second banner. Vitellian played Order Mounted, brought his widely-separated MC and Leader together in the center, and claimed another banner. At this point, Vitellian was ahead 4 (MC/M/H/M) to 2 (H/H). Othonian immediately claimed two banners on a weakened medium and a full-strengh heavy using his leaders very effectively. This tied the game 4-4, from a 3-0 start! But Vitellian used cavalry to chase down a weakened Medium to claim a 5-4 victory.

MATCH 2

    scrum4you Player 2 (Othonian)  5
    Kartigan  Player 1 (Vitellian)   3

Vitellian pushed lights up early and began ranged attacks from the very first move. The opponents continues ranged and melee attacks for a few turns with zero hits. Both sides formed lines by turn 4. A Vitellian line command brought the lines 2 apart and the two sides continued trading ineffective attacks. Vitellian played Darken the Sky that yielded 31 dice thrown but continue the poor shooting. At this point, 67 total dice thrown had yielded 5 blocks lost and no actual retreats! An Ohonian line command brought most of the lines together. Attacks and battle backs finally started to connect. Two 4block rolls took the first banners of the game:  two Vitellian heavies and a Vitellian leader. Down 3-0, Vitellian went on the offensive on his left flank, advancing two heavies and an auxilia for melee. They quickly wiped out two weakened mediums and one full-strength heavy (with a 4block roll), bringing the score to 3-3 in dramatic fashion. A brave 1block heavy with leader took out two of those units. Othonian then played Clash of Shields which he had been hoarding. He quickly took out a weakened medium and the 1block heavy, ending the game at 5-3 in 7 turns.

rjvonline vs gotigerssc

Home

rjvonline (Player 1) 3
gotigerssc (Player 2) 5

Two Double Times in the center brought victory to the Othonians (Player 2). I couldn't catch a break to bring my stronger left flank to contact. The Praetorians were instrumental, finishing the game on the enemy back row and straight-killing a full MC (even without rolling a flag).

Away

gotigerscc (Player 1) 0
rjvonline (Player 2) 5

Great battle-backs (1 full MI and 1 full MC killed, 1 HI taking 3 hits) exploiting a reasonably successful Double Time attack allowed me to crush the center and win without losing a unit despite taking quite a bit of losses from long-range. The last attack , against the weakened HI, was with a rather pitiful Spartacus roll that only activated a HI out of range and a LI. The LI moved against the weakened HI, with the HI's leader supporting it. 3 die rolls. 1 Leader face. Phew. The Prateorians never made it to contact, but the Warriors did.

So there you go, 2 victories for the Othonians, but my victory was a little luckier and better.

Game 1
EZPickins (Othonian) 0 banners
GomJabbar (Vitellian) 5 banners

Battle started with Othonian light troops inching their way forward to get into range. Vitellian pushed forward on the flanks, especially on their left flank. Vitellian definitely had the advantage in numbers on their left and it turned out great luck in cards and dice as well. The Othonian right flank was completely decimated. The Othonian leader Titianus then tried an assault in the center but a timely Vitellian First Strike forced then back. The Othonians regrouped near their baseline and, using a couple of Line Commands, advanced a formidable group in the center that included the Praetorian Guard and warriors. The Vitellian left then pivoted to take the Othonian center in a wraparound attack. Vitellius' Heavy Infantry unit slammed into the Othonian center's flank and took out a Medium and the Warrior unit (losing 4 blocks in 1 hit) for the win.

It just wasn't EZ's day unfortunately. His cards and especially dice were terrible whereas mine were very hot.

Game 2
GomJabbar (Othonian) 5 banners
EZPIckins (Vitellian) 3 banners

This time the Orthonians focused their attack on the left flank. Again the dice were very much in my favor. The Medium Cav met and the Vitellian Cav decided to exit the battlefield early. The action continued on the Othonian left with the Othonians having all the luck and getting 3 quick banners before the action shifted to the right. Here the Othonians were not as successful and got 1 banner in exchange for the 2 Medium Inf they lost. The action finished in the center with the Othonian Medium Cav staging a Mounted Charge on the lone Light Inf block on Vitellian's back line and getting 2 hits plus a retreat for the final banner and the match win.

It was painful to watch the dice gods rain favor on me and terror on EZPickins. There was one point about 1/2 way into the game when we realized that this was the first battleback EZ got to roll. All my other close combats either eliminated his unit or forced it to retreat. It was fun regardless and thank you to EZ for being a good sport.

JawaNick (Othonian) #5
Kandras78 (Vitellian) #2

The battle began with heavy fighting on the Othonian left, with both sides disengaging after Paulinus was forced to flee. The action switched to the other flank where both sides formed up before engaging. Following a clash of shields, the Othonians smashed through the Vitellian line for victory. My thanks to Andras for two compelling battle, that played out very differently.

JawaNick (Vitellian) # 3

Kandras78 (Othonian) # 5

Othonian army tried to form up a line to brace for the pincer move of the Vitellian forces. Things looked dire for the bottom army when a counterpush in the center left Titianus exposed with his retinue shrinked to a single block. After against all odds a Darken the Sky played by the Vitellians caused no real harm, Titianus came back with a successful Rally! eliminating Vitellius. Both armies commited all their best troops to melee (ívitellian I am Spartacus! mirrored by Counter Attack). Dice were more kind to the Othonians this time.

Very tense and enjoyable game which could have gone either way.
A mysterious Vassal issue had really tried our nerves with my frequent disconnection from the game.
Was a pleasure to play with Nick. Really looking forward to the re-match.

Played a delightful pair of games vs. Cavie

Game 1
Othonian (Cavie) 4 Banners
Vitellian (Ken) 5 Banners
Cavie opened with general light skirmishing, while I reorganized my left flank.  Cavie responded by reorganizing/refusing his right, followed by my reorganizing my right. Cavie advanced in the center, as I continued reorganizing until I had a line across my center and left flank.  After an exchange of missile fire, I dropped a line command and advanced on his center.  Cavie evaded and reformed his flank, then we both took a few turns to reorder our lines. I threw a mounted charge to see if I could get any useful labor out of my lone right flank MC, who earned their pay by driving back the MI and HI on his left flank.  He responded with an advance that eliminated the evading MC, the first banner of the game.  I reorganized my right flank, while Cavie dropped another line command and closed to a hex of my center, grinding a poor velites into the dust for a second banner. I used a double time to advance my left flank on right. Vitellian's MI killed a medium and reduced the Praetorians to a single block before falling.  Vitellian survived to retreat to the waiting arms of the HI, and follow up to finish off the Cavie's weakened Praetorians, and weaken another HI to a single block.  A pair of timely flags allowed VItellian to cowardly skitter away, denying Cavie any vengence. Cavie then reorganized his weakened line as I followed. I came out a little better in the exchange of blows, with us each picking up two more banners.  The game was decided by an attack by a weakened MI and Titanius on my unsupported MI and center leader; I lost three blocks but stood fast, and won my last banner in a battle back.  Very tense game that went to the wire.

Game 2
Othonian (Ken) 5 Banners
Vitellian (Cavie) 1 Banner
We both opened by reorganizing our centers, then the Othonian right/Vitellian left, then the Othonian left/Vitellian right. Due to slightly better cards I had a full line across three sections, while Cavie had formed three groups with good internal mutual support. Then followed a fairly long missile battle, that finished with Cavie getting his line together and advancing on his left, refusing his right. I obliquely advanced my center into the gap between his left flank and center, and a general engagement developed with Cavie taking his first banner. I had been sitting on a first strike card since the initial deal, and dropped it to thwart his momentum attack on the Praetorians. Thereafter fortuna took a hard turn against Dan, with under-par rolls that left my center intact for a counter attack that won my first banner plus Vitellus. Dan advance his center in an attempt to recover the situation, but the bad rolls continued for him and I was able to counterattack and take three more units in rapid succession. Luck just was not on Cavie's side this game.

The Othonians led most of the game, starting with luring the Vitellian cavalry into a First Strike ambush, and then a Double time up the middle. Then suddenly it went from 3-2 Otho way to 5-3 Vitellian. Having Titanus die on the field didn't help.

Really quick games

Game 1
Zocchi(Vitellian) #banners 5
Toganalper(Othonian) #banners 1
7 turns

Given the quantity of strong units, both armies chose not to try from a distance firing, but to shorten the distances to get closer to engage close combat. immediately the units quickly descend on the left side of both. the few command cards do not give the opportunity to react promptly, the double time card does its damage. A double mounted charge used, given by a smaller quantity of commands. But when a medium cavalry comes face to face with the Julian Legions .... game is done

Game 2
Toganalper(Vitellian) #banners 5
Zocchi(Othonian) #banners 3
6 turns

Same strategy for game 2 much closer to better fight using strong units. Othonian divides his army into three parts. Vitellian comes down from his left (already seen previously). Othonian try the ambush to the heavy: put them into the bottleneck and then hit them individually, and it works. That is, it partially works, until the Elite: Praetorians choose to kill themselves against a first strike. So the left flank of Vitellian defeat the Right side and Titianus dies as hero...so angry at the leader's death, they throw themselves headlong into battle defeating Vitellius. but the descent of the Vitellian in the right flank proved fatal for the Othonian.
"In rebus dubis plurimum est audacia"

thanks to Toganalper!

Mike Stanley (Vitellius) – 5 banners – won
Joe Harrison (Otho – 2 banners

I started out planning to sweep down upon his right flank units, but he quickly stole a march on me with the help of a Double Time card and broke through in the center. I had to play catch up for quite a while, but I had good luck with the dice, especially when I went after the Praetorians with a light unit and then my MC and eliminated them.
I then drew my own Double Time and took a few turns setting that up while also trying to threaten his 1-block HI with my MC to distract him. The Double Time cost me a HI but cost him 2 MI and the leader Titianus for the win.
