Background
"Haste was our only thought as we marched north on the Kingsroad, and we may pay dearly for our single-mindedness. Tywin Lannister was poised to bring ruin upon any advance toward King's Landing, and it was our hope to warn Robb Stark and join our arms to his. We traveled quickly but without caution, and suddenly found ourselves confronting a small band of southbound Lannisters, undoubtedly pursuing a similar task.
We suspect they have seen the Stark army and are urgently attempting to report to Tywin. Though we can only guess what story they have to tell, we know with certainty that this knowledge must travel no further south than where we have now fortified ourselves. With more men and more opportunity to prepare, we could have rendered this road impassable. But there was no time for a stockade and we are few. I confess I am unsure of our chances of success. Nonetheless, the Lannisters must not reach the Lord of Casterly Rock, no matter the cost."
