Historical Background
After a costly second assault, Howe realized he must carry the redoubt with one final massive push or have his reputation destroyed. He had the men shed their heavy packs and gave than a short rest. The remaining light infantry would fix the rail fence defenders in place while what was left of the grenadiers would attack the fleches and breastwork. The rest of Pigot's force, a Marine regiment and three regular regiments would carry the redoubt with bayonets fixed. The 1200 or so defenders left who hadn't deserted were exhausted and low on powder and ammo, but resolved to hold out against the last desperate British assault.
