Built on a lenghthened T-70 light tank chassis, this easy-to-manufacture self-propelled gun was the second most-produced Soviet armored vehicle of WWII, with 14,292 units built from 1943 into late 1945. It featured a 76 mm ZiS-3 (L/42.6) gun in an open-topped fixed turret, and two 76.2 mm machine guns for defense. With a maximum speed of 27 mph, a crew of four operated the type. While its thin armour and open top made it somewhat vulnerable, its relatively light weight (10.5 tonnes) and low ground pressure gave it good mobility. It served extensively in the close infantry support role beginning in mid-1943 through the end of the war, and was also effective against light and medium German tanks.
