This assault gun fired a 380 mm rocket-propelled round from a RW 61 launcher enclosed within a casemate-style armored superstructure atop the chassis of a late-model Tiger I tank. It was also armed with a 100 mm grenade launcher and a 7.92 mm MG 34 machine gun in a forward-facing hull mount. A crew of five operated the vehicle, and it had a top speed of 25 mph. Inspired by Wehrmacht experience fighting in the dense urban environment of Stalingrad, the Sturmtiger (“storm tiger”) concept was an evolution of the sIG-33B and Sturmpanzer IV vehicles. It provided heavy offensive fire support for infantry units. By the time the first Sturmtiger were available in mid-1944, however, Germany had lost the initiative. The 18 vehicles produced first saw service in August 1944, and fought on the Eastern and Western fronts in the Warsaw Uprising, Battle of the Bulge, and Battle of the Reichswald.
