This assault gun provided close infantry support by mounting a 15cm sIG 33/1 (schweres Infanterie Geschütz 33) (L/11) infantry gun in a three-sided, open-topped superstructure built on a lengthened Pz. II chassis. It also carried one 7.95 mm MG 34 machine gun, and a crew of four. It could attain a maximum speed of 25 mph. The 12 Sturmpanzer (“storm tank”) IIs built at the end of 1941 saw service in North Africa. They served as close support mobile artillery until the Axis surrender in Tunisia in May 1943. Egypt used at least one example in conflicts with Israel in 1948.
