This variant of the Stug III mounted a version of the 10.5 cm leFH 18 (L/28) howitzer, modified to be fired electrically and fitted with a muzzle brake. As such, it was intended to be used against infantry, entrenchments, bunkers, and other ground targets. It carried a crew of four, and had a top speed of 25 mph. Because of their low silhouette, Sturmhaubitze (“storm howitzer,” StuH) 42s were easy to camouflage and be hidden and were difficult targets to destroy. StuG and StuH assault guns were cost-effective compared to the heavier German tanks such as the Tiger I and Panther, although as anti-tank guns they were best used defensively as the lack of a traversable turret and its generally-thin armour was a severe disadvantage in the attack role. Germany produced about 1,299 of these vehicles from mid-1943, and used them throughout the war in Eastern, Southern, and Western Europe.
