This Italian 15-ton self-propelled (“semovente”) gun was an improved version of the Semovente da 75/18, featuring a 75 mm L/34 gun mounted on a M15/42 tank chassis. With the longer-barreled 75 mm, this vehicle improved the anti-tank capability of the 75/18. For defense, the type also carried one 8 mm Breda mod. 38 roof-mounted machine gun. A crew of three operated the vehicle, and it had a maximum speed of 24 mph. The 75/34 became operational in 1943 and first saw action during the Italain fascist regime's unsuccessful defence of Rome that September. The type later served with the Germans in Northern Italy and the Balkans, under the name Sturmgeschütz (StuG) M42 mit 75/34 851(i). Fiat-Ansaldo produced about 190 during the war beginning in spring 1943. Information is conflicting, but according to some sources Italy built up to 60 before the Armistice of Cassibile in September 1943, and perhaps 36 of these were ready before Italy surrendered to the Allies. Under German control, Fiat-Ansaldo built another 81.
