The UK rushed prototypes of this Quick-Firing (QF) 76.2 mm (L/55) towed gun to North Africa in early 1943 in response to the appearance of German Pz VI Tiger I tanks. It proved extremely effective, and continued to serve during WWII (and beyond) in anti-tank roles. During and after D-Day 1944, this gun equipped some tanks in British service--most notably the Sherman Firefly--that were highly effective against late-war, heavily-armored German tanks. The gun fired a variety of armor-piercing rounds, as well as high-explosive rounds for soft targets, but the latter tended to be a bit less effective than the 75 mm rounds available for the M4A1 Sherman. A crew of five or six operated the gun.
