The Germans converted approximately 174 captured French Renault R35 tanks into mobile anti-tank guns by replacing the turret with an armored superstructure and mounting a Czech Škoda A6 47 mm L/43 (German: 4.7 cm PaK (t)) gun. The gun was capable of firing both anti-tank and anti-personnel rounds. A crew of three operated the vehicle. These vehicles were intended to complement the Panzerjäger I mobile anti-tank guns but were less effective due to their slow speed (top speed of just 12 mph) and the overloaded chassis. While they saw service on the Eastern front during Operation Barbarossa, most were deployed to occupied territories; in 1944, some of these vehicles saw action on the Western front during the Normandy campaign and Operation Market Garden.
