This was the first German armoured fighting vehicle that mounted the 8.8 cm KwK 36 (L/56) gun. At the time of its introduction, it was the most heavily armed and armored fighting vehicle in the world, and the 8.8 cm main gun remained highly effective throughout the war. The type was generally mechanically reliable, but suffered from being expensive to produce, having high fuel consumption, being heavy and difficult to transport, and being vulnerable to immobilization when mud, ice, and snow froze its interleaved running wheels (as often occurred on the Eastern front). The Henschel & Son company built 1,347 between August 1942 and August 1944, after which production shifted to the Tiger II. The type served in North Africa, Italy, and the Eastern and Western fronts. A crew of five operated the vehicle, which could attain a maximum speed of 28 mph. These stats reflect the ToI base Tiger I unit, which also effectively represents all variants.
