The Panzerkampfwagen III design served extensively during the war, initially in the anti-armor role and later in the infantry support role. It carried a crew of five. Daimler-Benz ceased production in 1943 at 5,774 units, but its chassis provided hulls for a number of other vehicles into spring 1945, including the Sturmgeschütz III assault gun which was the most-produced German armored fighting vehicle of the war. The Panzer III saw service in all theaters. The Ausf. J was the most numerous Pz. III variant, but the Ausf. J, L, and M all carried the longer-barrelled and higher-velocity 5 cm KwK 39 L/60 main gun. Whereas this gun was not very effective against Soviet T-34 and KV-1 tanks, they were quite effective against Allied tanks in the North African theater. These variants also carried two MG 34 machine guns. It could reach a top speed of 25 mph. This unit represents the stats for the 'Panzer III Ausf. J' unit represented in the 1A Games Operations Card A10.
