The Panhard company developed this advanced reconnaissance 4x4 armoured car in 1937 for French Army Cavalry units. It featured a 25 mm SAL 35 (L/72) main gun in a fully-rotating turret and a 7.5 mm coaxial machine gun. In order to function as an effective long-range reconnaissance vehicle, the Panhard 178 (official name “Automitrailleuse de Découverte modèle 1935,” or AMD-35) had been kept as light as possible. Though all four road wheels were actuated, rough terrain capacity was somewhat limited. It carried a crew of four, with the driver in the front and an assistant driver in the rear. The Panhard's gear box was unusual in that its steering could be switched into reverse immediately, allowing the assistant driver to operate the vehicle fully in reverse. It had a top speed of 45 mph. The Germans used many of these vehicles after the Fall of France on the western and eastern fronts, and designated them the Panzerspähwagen P204 (f); French factories continued production for some some months after the armistice of June 1940 for Germany's benefit. After the war the French resumed production of derived version, the Panhard 178B, which served until 1968. French industry produced 729 units before and during World War II.
